USA and one Mexican duo unbeaten at La Paz women’s opening
LA PAZ, Mexico, June 7, 2019. - Devon Newberry/Peri Brennan of
USA and Mexican duo Diana Valdez Lizarraga/María José Quintero
finish opening day at La Paz Beach Volleyball Tournament, the
fifth stop of the NORCECA Tour, with unbeaten record.
Devon Newberry and Peri Brennan of United States started off
with their winning streak over the Mexican pair of Stephanie
Burnside and Paulette Cruz 2-0 (21-14, 21-18) in pool B. It
wasn’t easy to keep their 2-0 mark having to face the resilient
duo Socorro Lopez and Lolette Rodriguez of Nicaragua, second
seeds of the event, winning a tough 2-1 (26-24, 21-23, 17-15).
On the other hand, the home team of Diana Valdez Lizarraga and
María José Quintero in pool C, had no complications in sending
off Canadians Iris Fletcher and Abbey Thorup 2-0 (21-12, 21-12)
and Cristin Alexander with Chante Smith-Johnson of Cayman
Islands 2-0 (21-5, 21-12).
In pool A, Mexicans Claudia Ríos and Gloria Santoyo recovered
from the loss to Canada’s Devon May and Darby Dunn 2-0 (21-16,
21-13) prevailing to the number one seeded Kathy Vasquez and
Maria Fernanda Vargas of El Salvador 2-0 (25-23, 21-13).
Also, Melanie Valenciana/Cristina Almeida-Anz of U.S. Virgin
Islands in pool C, collected a 2-0 (21-17, 21-14) victory over
Cayman Islands’ Cristin Alexander and Chante Smith-Johnson.
The preliminary round will resume on Saturday, with the two
first placed in each group along with the best two third placed
will play the quarterfinals.
