USA duos and Cuba undefeated at Gatorade Guatemala BVB

 

GUATEMALA CITY, Guatemala, May 2, 2014. – American duos Tealle Hunkus/Kimberly Dicello USA-A and Heather Hughes/Christal Engle USA-B, joined by Cuban Lianma Flores/Leila Martinez in the women’s division, won in their two outings at Campo Marte, the first day of actions of the Gatorade Guatemala BVB Tournament.

 

A cloudy day, even with an afternoon shower, was the beginning of the second leg of the NORCECA Tour with pool play activity.

 

In Pool A, Tealle Hunkus and Kimberly Dicello of USA-A had no complications in their two outings of the day over Central American teams Maria Fernanda Vargas/Kathya Vasquez of ESA-B and Gina Flores/Martha Euceda of HON by 2-0 (21-6, 21-18) and 2-0 (21-4, 21-4) respectively.

 

It was another story for Heather Hughes and Christal Engle of USA-B in Pool C. In their second outing of the day, against Mexican duo Diana Valdez and Stephanie Burnside, they came from behind to take their second win by 2-1 (17-21, 22-20, 15-12). Earlier they had won over Ayana Dyete and Nancy Joseph of TTO by score of 2-0 (21-10, 21-9).

 

A good beginning for Cubans Lianma Flores and Leila Martinez in Pool B, with a surprising victory over Julie Gordon and Victoria Altomare of CAN-A in straight sets 21-15, 21-19; and another favorable score of 2-0 (21-11, 21-18) to Diana Romero and Marcela Avalos of ESA-A.

 

Also with two outings and two wins, Blanca Recinos with partner Lourdes Ramirez of GUA-A in Pool A, first to Hondurans Gina Flores/Martha Euceda by 2-0 (21-17, 21-8) and to Maria Fernanda Vargas/Kathya Vasquez of ESA-B by 2-0 (21-16, 21-13).

 

Pool D teams had only one match; winners were Karen Cope with Natalia Alfaro of CRC over team GUA-B of siblings Maria Jose and Maria Andrea Orellana by 2-0 (21-12, 21-18), and Victoria Cowley/Kerry Smit of CAN-B to Elia Torres/Claudia Machado of NCA by 2-0 (21-18, 21-16).
