USA gets first victory in FIVB World League 2013


WICHITA, United States, June 9, 2013 - United States defeated Argentina 3-1 (22-25, 27-25, 25-19, 25-16) in an FIVB World League match on Saturday at Charles Koch Arena. The two Pool A teams finished their first weekend of World League action with 1-1 records.


Matt Anderson led all scorers with 18 points, including two blocks and two aces. David Lee and Paul Lotman each added 11. Ivan Castallani paced Argentina with 17 points, including four blocks.


Argentina led in kills, 51-49, but the United States led in blocks 12-8 and in aces 10-1. Argentina also struggled with 28 team errors while the winners committed 25.


In Havana, Serbia overcame Cuba 3-1 (26-24, 25-22, 18-25, 25-21) in their second match of the FIVB World League at the Ciudad Deportiva Coliseum on Saturday. Serbia now has a 2-0 record while Cuba dropped to 0-2.


The top scorer in the match was the Serbian Aleksandar Atanasijevic with 21 points, followed by Yordan Bisset and Rolando Cepeda, who scored 16 points each. Next weekend, the Cubans will meet the Italians in Turin and Florence, and the Serbians will face the Russians in Kaliningrad.


Canada and Portugal met for the second night at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga and Portugal prevailed in four sets: 25-19, 20-25, 25-18, 25-23. Portugal now has a World League record of two wins and two losses, while Canada's record is the same at 2-2.


Portugal's Alexandre Ferreira had 17 points and the team's captain Joao Jose finished with 16. Gord Perrin was Canada's top scorer with 13.
