USA to battle Germany for the gold at Montreux

 

MONTREUX, May 31, 2014 – United States and Germany booked their spots in the finals of the Montreux Volley Masters after victories over Russia and Japan, respectively.

 

The Americans prevailed in four sets 25-23, 22-25, 25-20, 25-21 against the Russians while the Germans defeated the Japanese in straight sets 25-22, 25-18, 25-21 on Saturday.

 

Rachael Adams, Christa Harmotto and Kimberly Hill finished with 17, 16 and 15 points, respectively, for the United States. Kelsey Robinson and Kristin Hildenbrand added 14 and 11. Natalia Malykh had 22 for Russia.

 

Margareta Kozuch and Mariam Brinker each contributed 15 points to Germany’s victory while Hui Ruoqi and Yang Junjing had 12 apiece for China.

 

In the first action of the day, Brazil advanced to the match for the fifth place after a 27-25, 25-16, 27-25 victory over the Dominican Republic.

 

Monique Marinho led Brazil with 21 points followed by Jaqueline Carvalho and Gabriela Guimaraes with 12 and 11 points, respectively. Brayelin Martinez was the best Dominican with 15 points while Annerys Vargas added 10, including five blocks.

 

Japan will play Brazil on Sunday’s match for fifth place after overwhelming Switzerland 25-17, 25-16, 25-19.

 

Yuka Imamura and Yuki Shoji led Japan with 11 and 10 points, respectively, while Mandy Wigger finished with 13 for Switzerland.
