USA women crowned in Tokyo

TOKYO, Japan, August 8, 2021 – The USA women team scored one for the books as they won the gold medal for the first time in the history of the Olympic Games.

The team coached by Karch Kiraly beat Brazil with a text-book lesson of volleyball 3-0 (25-21, 25-20, 25-14) that capped the actions of volleyball at Ariake Arena on Sunday, August 8, 2021.

Andrea Drews, Michele Bartsch-Hackley and Jordan Larson contributed 15, 14 and 12 points, respectively, as the top scorers for the new champions. Fernanda Garay and Gabi Guimaraes finished with 11 and 10 points for Brazil.

The Americans had lost to the Brazilians the gold medal match in Beijing 2008 and London 2012 and had to settle for the bronze in Rio 2016.

Tijana Boskovic recorded 33 points, including six aces and two blocks, as Serbia claimed the bronze medal of the women’s volleyball tournament, after subduing South Korea 3-0 (25-18, 25-15, 25-15) on Sunday. Kim Yeong Koung finished with 11 points for the losers.
