USA, Canada, Guatemala and Mexico in Men’s Semifinals at La Paz

 

LA PAZ, Mexico, June 8, 2019. - Teams from United States, Canada-B, Guatemala and Mexico-A will play the semifinals at La Paz Beach Volleyball Tournament, the fifth leg of the NORCECA Tour.

 

Advancing into Sunday’s semifinals are Kyle Friend and Travis Mewhirter of United States facing top-seeded Andy Leonardo and Luis Garcia of Guatemala, and Canadian duo of Mathew Donovan alongside Fiodar Kazhamiaka against Mexicans Angel Sarabia and Raymond Stephens.

 

In the biggest surprise of the event, United States’ Kyle Friend and Travis Mewhirter struggled to outplay Bryton Codd and Francis Hauze of Belize in three sensational sets 2-1 (21-14, 20-22, 15-13). The American duo recovered from a seven point deficit (7-14) in set two, but still needed the tie-break to contain the strength of Belize.

 

Guatemalans Andy Leonardo and Luis Garcia, who also reached semifinals in Aguascalientes and Nicaragua where they won the silver medal, had to face long time Central American opponents Ruben Mora and Dany Lopez of Nicaragua in quarterfinals. Leonardo and Garcia won the tough quarterfinal battle in exciting tie-break 2-1 (21-18, 16-21, 19-17).

 

Canada’s Mathew Donovan and Fiodar Kazhamiaka won their quarterfinal match 2-0 (21-19, 21-18) to Costa Rica´s Sebastian Valenciano and Andrey Quintero. Donovan and Kazhamiaka have had a splendid tournament remaining unbeaten moving into semifinals.

 

Miguel Angel Sarabia and Raymond Stephens, second in pool D, advanced to the semifinals with a 2-0 (21-11, 24-22) all Mexican quarterfinal win over Jesus Alcazar and Francisco Tamayo who earlier won pool C.
