Wants to add international flavor to LVSF
PONCE, Puerto Rico, May 23, 2014 – The Idea of including clubs
from Dominican Republic and Cuba to the LVSF could be discussed
for the 2016 season.
The President of NORCECA Confederation and First Vice President
of the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) Cristobal
Marte, wants to integrate one team from Dominican Republic or
Cuba in the Puerto Rican Women’s Superior League, it was
informed by Nelson Perez, leader of the Puerto Rican Volleyball
Federation (FPV).
Marte, who is in Puerto Rico for the women’s and men’s world
championship qualifiers at Juan “Pachín” Vicens Auditorium in
Ponce, took opportunity to announce the idea during the official
press conference of the event. Even though Marte has intended to
materialize the idea for several years now, this is the first
time the Dominican has publicly revealed is plan of integrating
clubs from other countries to the Puerto Rican tournament.
In spite Perez see the desire of Marte as a good idea, the
leader of the Federation said the request must be analyzed in
details before submitting it to the Board of Owners of the LVSF.
“Cristobal is requesting to allow the participation of a club
from the Dominican Republic and, possibly, one from Cuba. The
idea certainly has several positive aspects but must be analyzed
with calm. Cristobal said the LVSF is the second best league in
the Americas and, certainly, it would be attractive to the
fans,” Perez said to Primera Hora.
The leader of NORCECA Confederation participated in the 1998
league with his club, Mirador, recalled the Carlos Beltrán,
former president of FPV. The lawyer explained that year he
invited the club to play one match against each of the teams of
the LVSF. The majority of the players of the club were members
of the Dominican National Team, reason for Miradores to win all
the matches of the series.
According to Perez one of the attractive of the idea presented
by Marte is that it would internationalize the Puerto Rican
tournament, besides giving a new option to the volleyball fans.
“It would also be good to promote the league. But we need to
analyze the rules to check if it can be allowed and to check
that the clubs are not national teams in order to maintain the
competiveness level. There are many things to be analyzed,
because in Puerto Rico we use the reserve system. It is an
innovating idea, but we must analyze it before submitting it to
the Board,” Perez said.
The President of FPV said that, in case they present the idea to
the Board, he would do it for the 2016 season and not for the
2015 tournament.
