Women’s AFECAVOL U21 Beach Tournament will have a new champion


PUERTO JIMENEZ, Costa Rica, August 31, 2017. - The tenth edition of the AFECAVOL U-21 Central American Beach Volleyball Championship that starts on Friday at Playa Preciosa in Puerto Jimenez, Costa Rica will have a new champion in the women’s field.


Hosts Vivian Hernandez and Angel Williams are the competition’s favorites as they finished last year with the silver medal while losing to Guatemala’s Natalia Giron and Estefanie Bethancourt.


Costa Rica has also registered a second team with Alex Mena and Kianny Araya.


Paola Alvarado and Maria Fernanda Juarez of Guatemala are the number one seed in the event and will have to battle strong to improve their fifth position in the previous edition. Laura Quiñonez and Kimberly Cardona are Guatemala’s number two team.


Laurens Alvarez of Honduras is one of the players repeating this year, now she teams up with Xue Murillo as HON-1 and Lois Terrylee Pinnace with Cecille Johnson are HON-2. Cecille Johnson is making her beach debut; she is a well-known volleyball player who has set several Central American records.


Nicaragua and El Salvador are presenting newcomers. Nicaragua with Paola Montealto/Anielka Alonso and Lourdes Lugo/Guisell Garcia; while Dana Funes and Alejandra Mariona represent El Salvador.


The first day of competitions starts with two pool matches, beginning with Dana Funes and Alejandra Mariona of El Salvador against Lois Pinnace y Cecille Johnson of Honduras-2. Followed by, Laura Quiñonez and Kimberly Cardona of GUA-2 facing Lourdes Lugo and Guisell Garcia of NCA-2.
