Yonkaira leads Dominican Republic to bronze in Montreux

MONTREUX, Switzerland, June 2, 2013 – The Dominican Republic overcame Italy in four sets (15-25, 25-22, 25-18, 26-24) to claim the bronze medal at the Montreux Volley Masters, the traditional women’s competition on Sunday.

The Dominicans recovered from a slow start and many mistakes in the first sets to dominate the next two frames and then to prevail in the close battle in the fourth set. It was a sweet revenge for the Caribbean team who lost to the Italians in straight sets in the pool play phase.

Yonkaira Peña, the most recent talented player to emerge from the rich national women’s program, led the Dominicans with 22 points, including four blocks. She was followed by Bethania De la Cruz and Prisilla Rivera with 15 and 13, respectively, while Marianne Fersola and Annerys Vargas contributed 7 and 6.

Cristina Barcellini and Valentina Diouf had 16 and 15 points, respectively for Italy while Raphaela Folie finished with nine.

In the match for the gold medal, Russia would be clashing with Brazil.
