Cubans Martinez & Flores win women’s gold in Varadero

VARADERO, Cuba, August 24, 2014 – Cubans Leila Martinez and Lianma Flores won their first gold medal of the season by defeating favorites Tealle Hunkus and Kimberly McGiven-Dicello in the decisive match of the Varadero  Beach Volleyball Tournament, the seventh stop of the NORCECA Circuit on Sunday. The only Cuban team in the women’s segment won by scores of 2-1 (21-17, 20-22, 15-8) to avenge the two defeats suffered at the hands of the Americans when Leila and Lianma took part this year in the two tournaments held in Guatemala, both times also in three close sets. Rogers and Brunner triumph in Varadero

VARADERO, Cuba, August 24, 2014 – Former Olympic champion Todd Rogers and Theo Brunner of United States-B stopped the undefeated Nivaldo Diaz and Sergio Gonzalez of Cuba-A in the men’s gold medal match of the Varadero Beach Volleyball Tournament, the seventh stop of the 2014 NORCECA Circuit. Rogers and Brunner, winners of the first tournament of the year at Cayman Islands, were victorious again with a 2-1 (13-21, 21-18, 15-11) win over the Cuban pair who had won the three events in which they took part this year –two in Guatemala and the other in Huixquilucan, Mexico.  More  Español

Cuba, Canada and USA to men’s semis in Varadero

VARADERO, Cuba, August 23, 2014 –The two main teams of Cuba along with Canada-A and United States-B, secured berths in the semifinals of the seventh stop of the NORCECA Beach Volleyball Circuit at Puntarena hotel in Varadero international tourist resort. Nivaldo Diaz and Sergio Gonzalez of Cuba-A, three-time winners this year and leaders of Pool D, will play against compatriots Karel Piña and Yendris Castillo while Grant O’Gorman and Sam Pedlow of Canada-A, winners of Pool B, will meet the second team of United States formed by 2008 Beijing Olympic champion Todd Rogers and Theo Brunner. Tealle and Kimberly after fourth victory of the year in Varadero
VARADERO, Cuba, August 23, 2014 –Tealle Hunkus and Kimberly MacGiven of United States-A seem determined to seek their fourth crown of the year in the NORCECA Beach Volleyball Circuit as the duo advanced to the semifinals of the seventh stage of the competition at Puntarena Hotel in Varadero. The American pair, winners of Pool A, won their quarterfinal match over Canada-A  of Victoria Altomare and Julie Gordon in three sets (18-21, 21-16, 15-10) in a match that lasted almost one hour. Cubans Sergio and Nivaldo undefeated in Varadero

VARADERO, Cuba, August 22, 2014 – The top Cuban duo of Nivaldo Díaz and Sergio Gonzalez won their two matches of Friday against the second teams of Canada and United States in the opening day of the seventh leg of the 2014 NORCECA Beach Volleyball Circuit. The winners of the three stops in which they have participated, two in Guatemala and the other in Huixquilucan, Mexico, are playing in Pool D. They began their day with a victory over Canadians Cameron Wheelan and Michael Plantinga 2-0 (24-22, 21-16).
