Dominican Brenda Castillo takes home the MVP award

MEXICO CITY, Mexico, June 19, 2014 – Brenda Castillo, whose sensational defensive skills proved to be crucial for the Dominican Republic’s victory at the Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup, was selected as the Most Valuable Player of the competition. Castillo, who was applauded loudly y the fans when her name was announced during the closing ceremony, also took home the awards as best receiver, best digger and best libero. Dominican Republic dethrones United States in Pan Am Cup

MEXICO CITY, Mexico, June 19, 2014 – Dominican Republic dethroned United States as champions of the Pan American Women’s Volleyball Cup with a 3-1 (25-18, 25-18, 17-25, 25-21) victory in the gold medal match of the 2013 edition at Juan de la Barrera Gymnasium of Mexico City on Thursday. It is the third crown for the Dominicans in the history of the event with the previous two in 2008 and 2010, snapping the two-year reign of the Americans. They also have won six silver and three medal bronzes. The winners committed only 20 unforced errors compared to 31 made by the defeated side. More  Español

Aury Cruz is the seventh reach the 30-point mark

MEXICO CITY, Mexico, June 19, 2014 – Aury Cruz became the seventh player in the history of the Pan American Cup to score 30 points in a single game as she carried Puerto Rico to a five-set victory over Argentina in the match for the bronze medal on Thursday. Cruz registered 30 points, including two blocks and one ace, to join the exclusive club topped by Dominican Republic’s Sidarka Nuñez with 37 in 2008 against United States. On the process, Cruz established a new record for Puerto Rican players in the intercontinental event, breaking the old mark of 29 set by her sister Eva Cruz, who scored 29 points. More  Español

Puerto Rico earns bronze medal in thrilling victory

MEXICO CITY, Mexico, June 19, 2014 – Puerto Rico captured the bronze medal of the XIII Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup following a thrilling five-set (24-26, 25-15, 24-26, 25-15, 16-14) victory over Argentina at Juan de la Barrera Gymnasium of Mexico City on Thursday. In the exciting battle, both teams scored via 17 blocks but Puerto Rico held a huge margin in attacks 71-54. Aury Cruz led the winners with a tournament-high 30 points while four other Puerto Ricans finished with double figures. Cuban Melissa Vargas turns into scoring machine

MEXICO CITY, Mexico, June 19, 2014 – Teenage Cuban sensation Melissa Vargas, who turns 15 next October, secured the scoring title of the XIII Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup after recording her third 24-point performance of the competition in the victory of Cuba over Canada on Thursday. Vargas, an opposite player of Cuba’s Women National Team, brought her tournament total to 134 points, the second highest mark in the history of the intercontinental event, trailing only Puerto Rican Aury Cruz, who recorded 151 in the 2009 edition. Cuba defeats Canada, finishes fifth

MEXICO CITY, Mexico, June 19, 2014 – Cuba outplayed Canada 3-1 (26-24, 23-25, 25-21, 25-15) to claim the fifth place at the XIII Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup at Juan de la Barrera Gymnasium of Mexico City on Thursday. Young sensation Melissa Vargas, who turns 15 next October, topped Cuba with 24 points, followed by Alena Orta, Daymara Lescay and Sulian Matienzo with 12, 11 and 10 points, respectively. Kyla Richey was the best for Canada with 18 points, including two blocks and three aces, while Brittney Page added 15 in the loss. Cuba took advantage of 34 errors by Canada while committing 25 of their own. The winners held margins of 10-7 and 6-5 in blocks and aces. More  Español

Colombia edges Mexico for seventh place

PACHUCA, Mexico, June 18, 2014 – Colombia edged hosts Mexico in five sets (19-25, 25-19, 18-25, 31-29, 15-11) in the match for seventh place of the XIII Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup on Wednesday at Carlos Martinez Balmori Multisport Hall. The South Americans improved the ninth place finish in 2013, but also had qualified to the World Grand Prix 2015, an unprecedented fact in the sport, a ticket also grabbed by Mexico from the NORCECA area. Dominicans to the final for second year in a row

MEXICO CITY, Mexico, June 18, 2014 – Dominican Republic advanced to the gold medal match of the XIII Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup after dispatching Argentina in straight sets (25-21, 25-18, 26-24) in their semifinal match at Juan de la Barrera Gymnasium on Wednesday. The winners dominated in attacks (40-30) and held a slight margin in blocks (12-10) with both teams scoring three aces apiece. Bethania De la Cruz and Gina Mambru each produced 14 points to pace the Dominican offense. Marianne Fersola added 10, including a match-high six blocks, and Yonkaira Peña added nine. More  Español

Peru finishes in ninth place

PACHUCA, Mexico, June 18, 2014 - Peru defeated Costa Rica 3-1 (25-12, 25-12, 22-25, 25-14) in the match for the ninth position at Carlos Martinez Balmori Multisport Hall in Pachuca on Wednesday. Karla Ortiz paced Peru’s offense with 17 points, followed by Maguilaura Frias and Angela Leyva each with 15 points. Angela Willis and Paola Ramirez finished with 13 and 11 points, respectively, for Costa Rica. Peru led in attacks (51-35), blocks (13-8) and aces (5-3). USA ready to defend their double title

MEXICO CITY, Mexico, June 18, 2014 – Two-time defending champions United States cruised to a straight set victory (25-15, 25-21, 25-17) in the first semifinal of the XIII Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup at Juan de la Barrera Gymnasium on Wednesday. The Americans, seeking their third consecutive crown -an unprecedented feat in the history of the intercontinental competition- will play the winner of the other semifinal match between Argentina and Dominican Republic. Mexico claims last NORCECA ticket to the 2015 Grand Prix

PACHUCA, Mexico, June 17, 2014 – Hosts Mexico crushed Costa Rica 3-0 (25-10, 25-22, 25-17) to claim the last NORCECA ticket to the 2015 FIVB World Grand Prix in the penultimate day of competition of the XIII Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup in Pachuca.  Mexico and Colombia, winners over Peru earlier on the day, will meet on Wednesday for the seventh place while the Peruvians and the Costa Ricans will determine the ninth position.  More  Español

Argentina complete the semifinalists at Pan Am Cup

MEXICO CITY, Mexico, June 17, 2014 – Argentina defeated Cuba 3-1 (25-23, 23-25, 25-20, 25-19) and qualified to the semifinals of the XIII Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup on Tuesday. Argentina held the advantage in attacks (58-51) and gave away 21 points with unforced errors compared to 28 by the losers. Leticia Boscacci and Josefina Fernandez each recorded 18 points in the victory while Sol Piccolo and Emilce Sosa contributed 10 points apiece. Damara Lescay was the best scorer for Cuba with 16 points, followed by Alena Orta and Melissa Vargas each with 13 tallies. Puerto Rico joins the Final Four phase

MEXICO CITY, Mexico, June 17, 2014 – Puerto Rico stormed past Canada in straight sets (25-17, 25-16, 30-28) in a quarterfinal match of the XIII Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup at Juan de la Barrera Gymnasium on Tuesday. The victory earned Puerto Rico a final-four berth in the annual intercontinental event against a rival still to be determined. Colombia claim first ticket ever to Grand Prix

PACHUCA, Mexico, June 17, 2014 – Colombia stunned Peru 3-0 (25-21, 25-23, 25-20) to secure a spot in next year’s FIVB World Grand Prix for the first time ever and will play for the seventh position at the XIII Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup at Carlos Martinez Balmori Multisport Hall of Autonomous State University of Hidalgo. In a contest that opens the history of head to head  matches between the two South Americans, the Colombians were more effective in attacks and serves with a good offense by Yeisy Soto, who had a match/high 14 points, followed by Amanda Coneo (13) and María Margarita Martínez (12).   More  Español

Argentinean Mimi Sosa shows “Messi” abilities

PACHUCA, Mexico, June 16, 2014 – Emilce “Mimi” Sosa, one of the most iconic players in the Argentinean volleyball women’s national team, is also an accomplished football player and once in a while she shows her outstanding skills maneuvering the ball.  That was the case before the match of Argentina and Costa Rica in the Pan American Cup on Sunday when Mimi celebrated the victory of Argentina over Bosnia, putting a show of tricks of ball touches using her feet, knees and head much to the delight of the fans at Carlos Martinez Balmori Gymnasium. Football was the first love in sports for the native of Formosa raised in an indigene community.  More  Español

Mexico overcomes Trinidad & Tobago

MEXICO CITY, Mexico, June 15, 2014 – Mexico erased a two-set deficit and went on to defeat Trinidad & Tobago 3-2 (18-25, 21-25, 25-15, 25-20, 15-8) in the last match of Pool A of the XIII Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup on Sunday. Mexico finished with a 3-2 record –with all the victories via five sets- and placed fourth behind Cuba who also compiled a 3-2 mark but with 15 points to 9 of Mexico. Andrea Rangel and Lizbeth Sainz each scored 19 points in the victory. Trinidad & Tobago’s Krystle Esdelle had a match-high 21 points in the losing cause. Argentina beat Costa Rica before leaving Pachuca

PACHUCA, Mexico, June 15, 2014 – Argentina defeated Costa Rica 3-0 (25-18, 25-12, 25-17) to confirm their second place in Pool B and a quarterfinals berth in the XIII Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup. The Argentineans totaled three victories with only one loss to United States, after defeating a battling Costa Rica but without enough weapons to play against a superior opponent that was better in all aspects. Natalia Aispurua was the best scorer of the match with 12 points for Argentina, followed by Josefina Fernández and Emilce Sosa with 11 and 10, respectively.  More  Español

Puerto Rico secures third place in Pool B

PACHUCA, México, June, 15, 2014 -  Puerto Rico dominated Colombia 3-0 (25-13, 25-22, 31-29) to secure third place of Pool B and a spot in the quarterfinals of the XIII Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup at Carlos Martinez Balmori Multipost Hall of the Autonomous University of Hidalgo. The Puerto Ricans used their experience to solve the critical situations, especially in the fourth set when the rivals battled hard. They closed with an advantage in attacks (49-36) and a slight 8-7 margin in blocks. The top scorers in the match were Aurea Cruz and Vanessa Velez each with 14 points, while Alexandra Oquendo contributed 11 for Puerto Rico who finished with a 2-2 win-loss mark in the preliminary round. More  Español

The Canadians saw their three-game winning streak come to an end to the hands of a high-spirited Mexican side. MEXICO CITY, Mexico, June 14, 2014 – The Dominican Republic survived a strong challenge to defeat Peru in five sets (25-18, 25-21, 22-25, 18-25, 15-12) earning their fourth victory in Pool A of the XIII Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup on Saturday. The Peruvians dropped to a 1-3 mark. Bethania De la Cruz paced the offense of the winners with 26 points as one of four players with double digits in the score charts. Yonkaira Peña added 19 and Gina Mambru and Marianne Fersola each contributed 14 points. USA book ticket to semifinals of Pan Am Cup

PACHUCA, Mexico, June 14, 2014 – United States brushed aside Costa Rica in straight sets (25-13, 25-9, 25-11) to conclude undefeated in Pool B and booking a direct ticket to the semifinals of the XIII Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup. The Costa Ricans couldn’t do many things against the Americans, whose opposite resulted in the best scorer of the match with 17 points followed by Chloe Ferrari, who charted nine. Paola Ramirez had seven points for Costa Rica. It was the fourth victory in a row for the USA team that won also in straight sets over Colombia, Argentina and Puerto Rico and now they move to the Mexican capital to play the medal contenders and to decide the top six places.  More  Español

Dominican Republic undefeated in three outings

MEXICO CITY, Mexico, June 13, 2014 – Dominican Republic claimed its third victory in a row in Pool A after defeating a brave Mexico in straight sets 25-23, 25-20, 25-22 in the third day of actions at the XIII Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup on Friday. The Mexicans battled point by point but at the end succumbed against a superior team of Dominican Republic. Yonkaira Peña was the main offensive arm for the winners with 18 points followed by Brayelin Martinez and Bethania De la Cruz with 9 and 8, respectively.  Mexico’s Andrea Rangel had a match-high 19 points in the losing effort. PACHUCA, Mexico, June 13, 2014 - Colombia cruised past Costa Rica in straight sets 25-16, 25-18, 25-16 earning their first win in Pool B on Friday at Carlos Martinez Balmori Multisport Hall.  The Colombian team hurt Costa Rica with well placed serves en route to a 13-6 margin in the aces category and also led in the blocking charts 7-3. Ivonne Montano was the top offensive players of the winning side with 16 points, including two blocks and three aces. Yeisy Soto and Danna Escobar contributed 11 and 10 tallies. Canada blanks Cuba in three close sets 

MEXICO CITY, Mexico, June 13, 2014 – Canada improved to a 3-0 mark in Pool A of the XIII Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup following a close victory over Cuba 25-22, 25-23, 25-21 at Juan de la Barrera Gymnasium on Friday. Kyla Richey and Lisa Barclay were the top scorers of Canada with 11 and 10 points, respectively, while Lucille Charuk and Marissa Field each added eight tallies. Cuba earns easy victory over Mexico

MEXICO CITY, Mexico, June 11, 2014 – Cuba cruised to a comfortable victory in straight sets (25-19, 25-17, 25-21) in the third and last match of Pool A of the XIII Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup at Juan de la Barrera Gymnasium on Wednesday. Cuba held a 10-6 advantage in the blocking charts with Alena Rojas finishing with five blocks of her own. Melissa Vargas was the main weapon of Cuba finishing with 16 points. Jennifer Alvarez and Rojas each produced 9 points while Sulian Matienzo added 8. Andrea Rangel topped Mexico with 10 points. “We were well motivated for this match against Mexico, a battling team,” Matienzo said. “They have good field defense but we beat them over the net. PACHUCA, Mexico, June 11, 2014 – Two-time defending champions United States started with a 3-0 (25-19, 25-19, 30-28) in the opening match of Pool B in the XIII Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup at Multisport Carlos Martinez Balmori. The Americans faced their toughest moment in the third set when the opponents evened up the score at 20-all and battled point by point before succumbing against a rival with better rhythm and outstanding blocking (16-14). Middle-blockers TeTori Dixon and Chloe Ferrari were very active and contributed the most points to the victory with 12 and 11, respectively. Dominican Republic stops Trinidad & Tobago

MEXICO CITY, Mexico, June 11, 2014 – Dominican Republic beat Trinidad & Tobago in a lopsided match (25-12, 25-11, 25-16) in Pool A of the XIII Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup at Juan de la Barrera Gymnasium on Wednesday. The solid blocking earned the Dominican Republic a 10-4 margin in the blocking category, including three by Annerys Vargas and Brayelin Martinez. Canada blocks Peru to win in four sets

MEXICO CITY, Mexico, June 11, 2014 – Canada defeated Peru in four sets (25-18, 26-24, 23-25, 25-20) in the first match of Pool A of the XIII Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup at Juan de la Barrera Gymnasium on Wednesday. The winners held a big margin in blocks 19-4 to go with 43 unforced errors to 28 by the losers. Canada’s Marissa Field led all the players in the match with 18 points, including four blocks and three aces. Aury Cruz holds record of most points in a Pan Am Cup

MEXICO CITY, México, June 10, 2014 –Aury Cruz of Puerto Rico has been the most prolific scorer in a single edition of Women’s Pan American Cup with the 151 points the amassed in the 2009 event held in Miami, Florida. The veteran Cruz also holds the all-time record of games with 20 or more points scored with 11, followed by countrywomen Karina Ocasio and Dominican Republic’s Bethania De la Cruz each with 8. USA Women go for third title in a row at Pan Am Cup

MEXICO CITY, Mexico, June 9, 2014 - The thirteenth edition of the Women’s Pan American Cup will take place in Mexico City and Pachuca from June 11-19 at Juan de la Barrera Gymnasium and Multi-sport Carlos Martínez Balmori Hall, respectively. Teams from eleven countries are registered to participate in the main annual intercontinental women’s volleyball event, a qualifier to next year’s FIVB World Grand Prix. Pool A consists of teams from Canada, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Mexico, Peru and Trinidad & Tobago, while the teams competing in Pool B are Argentina.  More  Español
