Canada qualifies to quarterfinals

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic, July 6, 2016 – Danielle Brisebois and Michaela Reeser scored 11 points each to lead Canada to a 3-0 (25-16, 25-18, 25-14) victory over Mexico in Pool A of the XV Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup on Wednesday.

The victory earned Canada a ticket to the quarterfinals of the competition where they will face the second placed team of Pool B.

Canada outblocked Mexico 10-2 and held a 7-2 advantage in service winners.

Alina Dormann and Jennifer Cross contributed six points each in the victory while Dulce Carranza was the leading scorer for the Mexican side with just 6 points.

“It was an important match to win and our team came in focused to get the victory,” said Arnd Ludwig, coach of Canada. “We will face the second place team from the other pool.”

“I think Canada is on the right track as a team while we are paying the price of a bad preparation for this competition,” said Ricardo Naranjo, the coach of Mexico. “Many players came to training camp in bad shape and today the team didn’t show the courage.”

“We played clean volleyball in a must-win match,” said Lucille Charuk of Canada. “We are getting ready for the second round.”

“Our team was very different than yesterday,” said Carranza. “We made too many errors.”
