Cuba defeats Antigua and Barbuda

HAVANA, Cuba, June 24, 2016 – The Cuban team made its debut overpowering Antigua and Barbuda in three straight sets (25-8, 25-7, 25-19) in the second match of the B Pool in the NORCECA Boys U-19 Volleyball Championship which takes place in the Sports City Coliseum.

The host team showed better fitness and technical level the reason they are considered, jointly with the USA team, clear favourite squads to go tothe final match as happened in 2014 when they were defeated by United States. Likewise both teams are virtual winners of the two WCH tickets to be awarded here.

Local coach, Nicolas Vives, stated “at the beginning of a tournament, the boys are some stressed; particularly as it has bee a log time without playing. It is their debut, but they played well. Except in the third set where they relaxed their concentration. Nevertheless, we won and it is what matters”.

The setter, Jorge Alain Camejo, host captain, declared “it was an easy match, but we had to do our level to get ready for tomorrow when we will meet a greater commitment against Mexico. With respect to the final set, we were overconfident, I think”.

Olsen Joseph, visiting coach, said “the boys were much more nervous and excited than centred o their technical skills. In the third set, all came together for them as they played much confident which is the how they usually play and therefore it was easier for them. That’s why I screamed them “playing Volleyball is simple!”

Cairon Dais, the team captain, expressed “hopefully from today onward it would be better as in the first match we always have to adapt to the atmosphere.”

Cuba venció al equipo de Antigua y Barbuda

LA HABANA, Cuba, 24 junio, 2016.- El equipo cubano debutó con triunfo sobre el de Antigua y Barbuda en parciales continuos (25-8, 25-7, 25-19) en el otro encuentro del grupo B del Torneo Continental NORCECA sub-19 masculino que tiene lugar en la Ciudad Deportiva.

Los de casa exhibieron un mayor físico y nivel técnico, por lo que son considerados junto a los estadounidenses también favoritos para discutir el título como en el 2014 cuando cayeron frente a los norteños, así como ambos asegurar los dos boletos mundialistas que se concederán aquí.

El director técnico local, Nicolás Vives,  señaló que "en el comienzo de un torneo siempre los muchachos sueltan un poco de estrés, más porque hace un buen tiempo no juegan y es el debut, pero jugaron bien aunque en el tercero se relajaron. No obstante ganamos que es lo más importante".

El pasador Jorge Alain Camejo, capitán anfitrión, opinó que "fue un juego fácil, pero tuvimos que hacer lo nuestro para prepararnos con vistas a mañana y mucho más el compromiso frente a México, pienso que en el último tramo hoy nos confiamos demasiado".

Olsen Joseph, entrenador de los visitantes, dijo que "los muchachos estaban mucho más nerviosos y emocionados que concentrados en sus habilidades. En el tercer set actuaron mejor como conjunto y con más confianza, ese es el tipo de juego que ellos realizan y por eso se les hizo más fácil, por eso les gritaba !ven, es así de sencillo el voleibol!".

 Por su parte, Cairon Davis, el capitán, consideró que "esperamos que en lo adelante sea todo mejor, porque en el primer partido siempre tenemos que adaptarnos a la atmósfera".
