Cuba prevails over Costa Rica
COLIMA, Mexico, August 7, 2025 – Cuba needed just three sets to
defeat Costa Rica 3-0 (25-10, 25-13, 25-16) in the first match of
Thursday's Pan American Volleyball Cup, being played at the
Multifunctional Auditorium of the Morelos Sports Complex in Colima,
Mexico.
Cuba ends pool-play with a 1-3 record and Costa Rica with 0-4. Both
teams will play for positions 7 to 10.
The Cubans led in attacks 40-24, in blocks 9-5, and in serves 6-1.
Cuba had three players in double figures: captain Dezirett Madan
with 15, Gretel Moreno with 12, and Yanisleidis Sánchez with 11.
For Costa Rica, Ana Victoria Rojas stood out offensively with 10
points.
Manuel Torres, Cuba coach: “It wasn't a demanding match, but we
needed it to find a position and place ourselves in the groups.
Winning points is always important, and we had the opportunity to
win the match.”
José Miguel Briceño, Costa Rica coach: “Cuba always has history, I
think we respected Cuba a lot in the first set, and that made our
game different from the previous ones, however, we grew in
confidence and will continue to improve to achieve our goal of
reaching 18 or more points at some point.” |
