Grenada finds form to defeat St. Vincent and the Grenadines

St. JOHNS, Antigua, September, 10 , 2016 – Grenada look like a much better team than in their first match when they brushed aside St. Vincent and the Grenadines in straight sets  (25-16, 25-19, and 25-19) in the ECVA World Cup Qualifying tournament Group B women. It was their second game of the tournament and a must win situation for them as they lost their opening game to Antigua and Barbuda.

Coach Brathwaite was pleased yet humble with the victory. First of all let me congratulate St. Vincent for play a very competitive game. I could see that there was a big improvement in some areas of our play especially the serving which was very good and also our back court support which stood out. In general our defense got a little better but that is something that I would like to see some more improvement in. We will work on that in theory sessions as we have no time to do practice as I believe that we will be playing again in the finals”, he said.

Cluevvan Cumberbatch coach of St. Vincent and the Grenadines was visible crestfallen “I feel down and disheartened with my debut as a coach. The girls could have done much better. It appears as if everything was off, the serving, the passing and this in particular affected us because if you don’t pass the ball well you have nothing to attack”, he complained.

Grenada was blessed with 47 points (approximately 62 % of total points) from opponents’ errors while on an individual level Renisha Stafford led all scorers with 9 points. For St. Vincent Krystal Ralph was the highest scorer with 6. St. Vincent only bright spark was their spiking as they had 20 kills to Grenada’s 13. However Grenada came out on top in Blocks - 7 to 3 and in Service Points 8 to 5.

One key match remains in pool play when Antigua/Barbuda meets with St. Vincent and the Grenada in the evening of September 10. That game will determine who plays in the finals.
