Guatemalans Leonardo and García win men’s crown

CIUDAD COLON, Costa Rica, December 18, 2016 – Andy Leonardo and Luis Garcia of Guatemala recovered the men’s crown for their country as they defeated Dany Lopez and Ruben Mora of Nicaragua 2-0 (21-15, 21-18) in the title’s match at the XVI Central American Beach Volleyball Championship on Sunday.

Last year at Puerto Cortez, Honduras, Lopez and Mora gave Nicaragua its first crown at the senior level by defeating Guatemalans Garcia and Julio Recinos.

However, the presence of Leonardo this time secured a stronger blocking, making the opponents’ attack very difficult, besides the accurate touches and good defense by Garcia.

Leonardo and Garcia defeated Costa Rica’s Bryan Monge and Ronald Masis 2-0 (21-15, 21-16) in quarterfinals and 2-0 (21-16, 21-19) over Carlos Escobar and David Vargas of El Salvador in the semifinals.

Lopez and Mora put aside compatriots Denis Lopez and Gerson Contreras 2-0 (21-17, 21-15) and then edged Franklin Flores and Armando Guatemala of El Salvador 2-1 (21-15, 17-21, 15-13) in a very demanding match.

In the match for third place featuring both teams from El Salvador, Flores and Guatemala defeated Escobar and Vargas 2-0 (21-17, 21-15).
