Hosts Canada grab first victory in Langley

 

Canada, host of the Norceca Men’s Continental Championship won 3-0 (25-10, 25-10, 25-10) against Guatemala in the last match of first day of competition.

 

Gavin Schmitt scored 12 points (including 2 aces) for the Canadian team while Rudy Verhoeff finished tallied 11. Guatemala’s Andy Alexis Leonardo scored 11 points for the Central American squad that will face Mexico on Tuesday. The other two teams that will take action on Day 2 are Puerto Rico and Dominican Republic.

“Best luck to Guatemala for tomorrow’s match against Mexico and the rest of the tournament, for us actually this was an important match because we needed to make points and get a 3-0 victory and avoid quarterfinals,” said Canadian captain Fred Winters.

“First of all thank you for making us to feel a great stay. Congratulations to Canada is a great team and was a priviledge to play against them. We expected this result, but We hope to have a better match tomorrow,” said Guatemala’s captain Oscar García.

 

“We knew it was going to be a very difficult match for us. They have a very solid team with great results in this moments and They have shown in on the court. We came here to develop our game and to improve our level step by step,” Guatemala’s coach Reider Lucas Mora stated.

 

For the coach of Canada, Glenn Hoag, Guatemala showed some good things. “I didn’t know the team of Guatemala very well but I thing they demonstrated good reception and good defense at moments. For us We had to keep focus because as Fred said, every point is important and this is our last tournament of the summer.”
