HUACHO, Peru, June 10 2013 - Dominican Republic prevailed in a well fought fourth set to defeat Brazil 3-1 (21-25, 25-20, 25-21, 35-33) in a match of the Movistar Women’s Pan American Cup that lasted more than two hours .

Yonkaira Peña recorded 22 points for the Dominican team while Captain Bethania de la Cruz finished with 19 tallies and Stephany Arias chipped in 11. For the Brazilian team Sara Silva and Gabi Guimaraes scored 15 apiece while Captain Rosamaria Montibeller and Valquiria each recorded 14 points.

“This is our first match in the Cup, they played with a lot of energy against us, we were a little bit out of focus, but fortunately finished with the victory”, Dominican De la Cruz stated.

“I want to congratulate the very young team of Brazil. We have more experience but are coming back from a long trip, we are still getting in shape for this event and the Pan Am Cup is a very difficult tournament,” said Marcos Kwiek, coach of the Dominican Republic.

The Brazilians played battle relentless and, despite the result, the most important thing was about learning from the experience.

“It was a good match because we are focusing in the preparation for the World Championship, we faced some difficult plays and we knew who we were facing. It was very disputed set by set and point by point,” stated Montibeller.

“We are playing with a young team and faced the Dominican senior team, it was very hard but I am very proud of the way they played against a more experienced squad,” Brazilian coach Luizomar de Moura remarked.
