Mexicans and Costa Ricans each collect 2 wins to open Punta Cana

PUNTA CANA, Dominican Republic, September 28, 2018 – Mexicans Josué Gaxiola and José Luis Rubio won the men’s Pool D of the Punta Cana Beach Volleyball Tournament after collecting three victories in as many outings on Friday.

Gaxiola and Rubio downed the two Puerto Rican pairs and completed their run with a victory over Dominicans Alex Medina and Jeambatis Jamel.

The Mexicans first won 2-0 (21-13, 21-11) against Cristian Encarnación and Josué Rivera of Puerto Rico-A following with a 2-0 (21-17, 21-14) win against Randall Santiago and William Rivera of Puerto Rico-B.

In the evening session, Gaxiola and Rubio faced Medina and Jamel who had lost two matches of three sets in the day. The Mexicans won 2-0 (21-9, 21-19).

Also, Richard Smith and Bryan Monge of Costa Rica defeated Isaac Theodore and Marlon –Waldo- Phillip of Trinidad and Tobago 2-0 (21-9, 21-19) to complete three wins in Pool E.

They first beat Sean Seabrooke Racinto Jeffers of St Kitts and Nevis 2-0 (21-13, 21-10) and Carlos –Tato- Escobar and David –Pepe- Vargas of El Salvador 2-0 (21-16, 21-10).

In Pool F, Nicaraguans Ruben Mora and Dany López won their two matches of Friday.

Mora and López scored a big surprise by out playing USA’s Branden Clemens and Ben Vaught of United States-B 2-1 (18-21, 21-16, 15-13) in 50 minutes and then subdued Dominicans Rolphy López and Juan Carlos Espinal 2-0 (21-4, 21-4) in just 24 minutes.

Mora and López will go for a third victory when they face Andy Leonardo and Luis García of Guatemala on Saturday.
