Mexico Defeats Puerto Rico and Achieves

a Three-Way Tie in Pool A

COLIMA, Mexico, August 7, 2025 – In a hard-fought match, Mexico defeated Puerto Rico 3-1 (25-22, 25-20, 22-25, 30-28), creating a three-way tie in Pool A of the Pan American Volleyball Cup, an event held in Colima, Mexico.

Mexico, Puerto Rico, and Peru finished the Pool A round robin all with a 3-1 record. Based on points, Puerto Rico advanced directly to the semifinals, pushing Mexico to second place and Peru to third.

Mexico dominated all aspects of the game: attacks 52-45, blocks 15-6, and serves 9-8.

For the home team, Sofía Maldonado had 23 points, followed by Melanie Parra with 17 and Grecia Castro with 15.

Decelise Champion led the field for Puerto Rico with 12 points, followed by Valeria Vázquez with 10.

Mexico will face Venezuela in the quarterfinals, while Colombia will play Peru.

Nicola Negro, coach of Mexico: "It was important for us to win that game in three sets to qualify directly for the semifinals, we couldn't achieve that, but I really liked how the girls played in the fourth set, never forgetting that on the other side of the court they were facing the fourteenth-ranked team in the world. So for us, that victory must be a huge satisfaction."

Juan Carlos Núñez, coach of Puerto Rico: "It's no surprise, all these games we have with Mexico, they're always very intense, and I liked my group, they were able to come from behind and fight for the match, we were one point away from going to a fifth set, now it's time to prepare for whatever's next."
