Mireya to lead NORCECA’s new Athletes Commission

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic, October 24, 2020 – NORCECA Volleyball Confederation will have an Athletes Commission presided over by Cuban legend Mireya Luis Hernández, the three-time Olympic champion.

The creation of the new commission was discussed a day earlier during the meeting of the Executive Committee and Board of Administration.

“The commission will permit the players to have a voice in the decisions of the organization regarding the protection of the athletes,” said Luis Hernández who was part of the IOC Athletes Commission for eight years.

“The role of the commission will be to defend our athletes and to hear their claims and comments”, Luis said. “I am elated with this opportunity to represent the athletes, the most important part of our competitions.”

The president of NORCECA Cristobal Marte Hoffiz requested from each of the four zonal associations within the confederation to submit a list of three former players with solid backgrounds as potential members of the new commission. The zonal associations are NCVA, CAZOVA, ECVA and AFECAVOL

The list must include players of both genders and cover both volleyball and beach volleyball.

The Athletes Commission was the last point discussed during the afternoon session on Saturday following the reports presented by the presidents of the eleven commissions of NORCECA: Finance, Sport Organizing, Beach, Development, Marketing, Refereeing, Press, Medical, Legal, Coaches and VIS.
