Peña scores 20 in Dominican victory over Turkey

RIMINI, Italy, June 7, 2021 - Yonkaira Peña scored 20 points to lead the Dominican Republic's victory over Turkey 3-1 (25-22, 25-21, 23-25, 25-17) in a women's volleyball match of the FIVB Nations League.

It was the fourth victory against the same number of setbacks for the world’s eighth ranked Dominican team, while Turkey, 4th in the FIVB ranking, lost for the first time after seven wins.

Peña, who had a block and one ace among her 20 units, was escorted in the attack by Brayelin Martínez and Bethania de la Cruz with 16 and 13 points, respectively, and Jineiry Martínez, who finished with 10, including 6 blocks.

For Turkey, Tugba Senoglu was the best with 13 points, while Meryem Boz, Eda Erdem and Ebrar Karakurt had 10 each.

For the Dominican Republic it is their second all-time victory against Turkey, with the previous one on August 8, 2014 via 3-2 (23-25, 19-25, 25-22, 25-22, 15-9) at the World Grand Prix.

The winners led 54-45 in the attacks category and both teams finished with 9 blocks. The Turks held the margin in service winners 5-4 and committed 31 errors against 26 of the Dominicans.

The Dominican Republic's four victories have come against Canada, Korea, Poland and Turkey. They have lost two games in five sets to Belgium and Russia, respectively, and lost their first two games to the United States and Brazil in consecutive sets.

The Dominicans play on Tuesday against Thailand.
