Top NORCECA Women’s squads to compete in Caguas
CAGUAS, Puerto Rico, September 6, 2011 - For the second time the
city of Caguas, 21 kilometers to the south of San Juan, Puerto
Rico, will play host to the best women’s volleyball teams of
NORCECA Confederation on September 10-18 where the winner will
get a ticket to the FIVB World Cup in Japan next November.
The participating teams are: Pool A: Mexico, Costa Rica and
Puerto Rico; Pool B: Canada, United States and Trinidad &
Tobago, and Pool C: Dominican Republic, Cuba and Panama.
Defending champions Dominican Republic were first-time winners
when the competition was held two years ago in Bayamon, Puerto
Rico in 2009.
In the final match,
Dominican Republic saved four match-points in the fourth set and
went on to defeat hosts Puerto Rico 19-25, 25-23, 16-25, 32-30,
15-8 in front of more than 7,000 enthusiastic spectators.
Cuba
is the winningest country with 13 crowns followed by United
States with five. The “Morenas del Caribe” have always finished
among the top-three in the 21 previous contests with 7
second-places and one bronze medal. The Americans have finished
second 11 times and also have placed third on three occasions.
Canada
is the only other country with double figures in the medals
department with two silvers and eight bronzes. Dominican
Republic has five bronze medals while Mexico has taken two golds
and three bronzes.
