St. Maarten marched to victory over Bermuda

Phillipsburg, Sint Maarten Saturday 6th August 2016: St. Maarten rode a wave of confidence as they defeated Bermuda with the scores of 25-22; 15-25; 25-22; 25- 23.  With the support of a loud home crowd, St. Maarten was able to overcome many close moments to leave the court with a win. Team Captain Mills worked hard to encourage her ladies to perform when it mattered most.   Her team produced a three prong attacked with Carlijin Van Bergen (9) scoring thirteen points (13), Keishan Huggins (5) contributing eleven (11) points and Captain mills contributing another ten (10) points.  

Bermuda pushed their opposition physically and mentally, though they lost the game. Team Captain, Alison Settle – Smith (4) showed good leadership skills as she directed her offense to strike fear in the hearts of the opposition.  Outside hitter Khinda Pearmon- Watson (10) showed her prowess as she spiked with little resistance from their opposition. Her exploits produced twenty three (23) points, thus leading her team’s attack.    

Captain Lathasha Mills of St. Maarten was relieved to have won the match.  She said the opposition played a very good game but St. Maarten’s error of relaxing in the second set could have costed them the match.  Team coach Dimitri Beauperthny said the game showed the versatility of the group and their strength and confidence grew.  Both the coach and captain of St. Maarten complimented the tireless effort of their opposition.

Captain Alison Settle-Smith (4) of Bermuda stated the opposition rose to the challenge as they overcame the loss of a set to win the match.  Despite that, Bermuda’s team played well, but the home crowd support was insurmountable.  Coach Elisabeth Rae was proud of her team and witnessed her players rising to the occasion when it mattered most.
