USA Women go for third title in a row at Pan Am Cup

MEXICO CITY, Mexico, June 9, 2014 - The thirteenth edition of the Women’s Pan American Cup will take place in Mexico City and Pachuca from June 11-19 at Juan de la Barrera Gymnasium and Multi-sport Carlos Martínez Balmori Hall, respectively.

Teams from eleven countries are registered to participate in the main annual intercontinental women’s volleyball event, a qualifier to next year’s FIVB World Grand Prix.

Pool A consists of teams from Canada, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Mexico, Peru and Trinidad & Tobago, while the teams competing in Pool B are Argentina, Colombia, Costa Rica, Puerto Rico and United States.

The top ranked teams from each pool get automatic tickets to the semifinal phase while the second and third placed teams move on to the quarterfinals.

United States, winners of the past two competitions, will be out trying for an unprecedented three-peat and a record tying fourth gold medal with Cuba in the history of the cup.

Besides their triumphs in 2012-13, the Americans won the second edition of the event in 2003. Cuba won the inaugural intercontinental tournament in 2002 and also finished atop in 2004-05 and 2007.

Brazil and Dominican Republic, with three and two crowns, respectively, are the other countries with first place finishes at the Pan American Women’s Cup.

Brazil claimed top honors in 2006, ’09 and ’11 while the Dominicans stepped on the top of the podium in the 2008 and 1010 editions.

The members of the control committee made inspection visits to the playing and practice venues on Monday and carried out the preliminary enquiry to the teams.

The general technical meeting is scheduled to take place on Tuesday 10 at 20:00 at Fiesta Inn Hotel of Mexico City.
