Anderson leads USA sweep of Russia

 

   

LONG BEACH, USA, June 6, 2015 – USA got double victories over Russia after they succeeded 3-0 (25-23, 25-21, 25-16) in Pool B of the FIVB Volleyball World League at the Walter Pyramid on Saturday.

 

Matthew Anderson tallied 14 points from 12 attacks, one block and one service ace, to lead the United States in their second victory on Russia in their home turf. Aaron Russell and Murphy Troy helped out Anderson with 10 points apiece.

 

Russia, on the other hand, struggled to get their scorers going, with only Pavel Moroz managing to score in double figures. Moroz finished with 12 points, while Dmitriy Ilinykh only scored seven points.

 

In Halifax, Canada, the visiting Argentina won a battle with Canada 3-2 (23-25, 25-22, 21-25, 25-19, 15-10) as part of FIVB World League intercontinental round play.

 
More than 2,600 fans sat on the edge of their seats, as Canada started strong, but let the skilled Argentineans take the second of two matches – Canada won in three sets on Friday at the same venue.


Steven Marshall contributed the most points for Canada with 20; and Gavin Schmitt had 17. Nicholas Bruno was the high scorer for Argentina with 18.

 

In Havana, Cuba, the visiting Bulgaria came back from losing the first set to beat hosts Cuba 3-1 (18-25, 25-20, 26-24, 25-23) in Pool C.

 

Danail Milushev led Bulgaria to victory with 18 points, followed by Petkov Stanislav with 10 points. Cuban captain Rolando Cepeda, in another splendid scoring stint, topped all scorers with 21 points on a losing effort.
