Costa Rica dominates hosts Honduras

 

TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras, August 9, 2014. - Costa Rica dominated hosts of Honduras 3-0 (25-13, 25-14, 25-12) on day three of competitions at the II Women’s U-23 AFECAVOL Central American Championship.

 

Defending champions of Costa Rica showed a powerful performance with superiority which the home team wasn’t able to hold them back in front of a thousand spectators at Jorge A. Galeano Gymnasium.

 

Costa Rica has ten points and a 2-0 win-loss record; Honduras also has ten points but record of 2-1.

 

Costa Rica held an overwhelming 40-13 advantage in kills and better blocking by 7-4. Honduras had advantage of 5-4 in service points. Costa Rica benefited from Honduras’ 24 errors and committed 17 of their own.

 

Costa Rica’s opposite Mijal Hines topped all scorers with 19 points, the only one with double figures. Outside hitter Tannia Carazo and Evelyn Sibaja contributed with 8 points apiece. Lesby Midence was Honduras’ best scorer with 5 points.

 

Mijal Hines captian of Costa Rica said “Honduras played strong but we were highly motivated to face the home team who had the crowds’ support. We are aiming for the gold medal and I believe we are able to win it”.

 

Eloisa Sarmiento captain of Honduras said that they played with ups and downs “we weren’t able to be consistent; we missed valuable opportunities to score more while Costa Rica played strongly. Tomorrow we’ll give everything we got”.

 

Coach Horacio Bastit expressed “the group has traced an objective and today they played tactically as expected; we are still in the process of learning to be disciplined in our game plan. We knew how Honduras performed and we were determined not to allow them do what they do well. Today our attacks were better than yesterday and maybe that’s why we seemed more comfortable”.

 

“I dream with what is possible, Costa Rica has better condition than us and in my opinion they have what it takes to win the title” indicated coach Marco Tejada. “We committed many unforced errors and Costa Rica didn’t let us perform, in consequence our players we left without resources to solve and one of our best players was totally annulled by our opponents. In general the result isn’t bad, I thought it could have gone better but this isn’t over”.
