Dominican Republic open with a victory over Colombia

 

CORDOBA, Mexico, Noviembre 25, 2014.- Dominican Republic defeated Colombia 3-0 (25-18, 25-19, 27-25) in the opening match of Volleyball Men’s competition at the XXII Central American and Caribbean Games.

Dominican Elvis Contreras tallied a total of 23 units, while German Recio closed with 13 (3 aces) and José Cáceres with 11.

 

For Colombia, Alexander Moreno finished with 13 points, and Adonis Herrera recorded 11.  Dominican Republic had a 4-3 service advantage and a 6-5 blocking ballance . In points by mistakes  Colombia gave 16, while Dominican Republic 17.

 

The South American team had the chance for a comeback in the third set, however

 

the Dominican blockers converted right points and worked hard with their service, despite failing a couple of times.

 

“We knew it was going to be difficult for us. We felt nervous, but tried to strike back in the third set, but fell short,” said Colombian setter Juan Camilo Ambuila, who attended the press conference in representation of captain Alexander Moreno, after he experienced some pain issues after the match and was checked by the medical staff.

 

Dominican captain, Elvis Contreras stated: “They had a good reaction in the third set, but we kept the union as a team to go on. We got the best from their weakness in accuracy and worked a lot with our serve as well as our diagonal block strategy.”

 

Daniel Moine, coach of Colombia said: “This was a very good match on the Dominican side. We were very pressured by their serve. We also experienced some issues in the reception and tried to make some adjustements in our defense and blocking game, But we have to improve our reception.”

 

For Dominican Republic Coach, Jose Angel Alvarez, the beginning of the competition with this result was very important. “I agree with my captain, when he says thar we tried to get the best of our opponent’s weakness. Things went right. I congratulate Mexico for such a great organization of the Games. We want to qualify to the next round. To take one step at a time.”
