Dominican Republic start off on the right foot

 

   

GURABO, Puerto Rico, September 11, 2015 – Dominican Republic beat Turkey 3-0 (25-20, 25-14, 25-21) in their first match at the FIVB Volleyball Women’s U20 World Championship on Friday night.

 

The duo of Brayelin Martinez and Natalia Martinez led the Dominican Republic with 16 and 12 points, respectively, while Jinery Martinez and Gaila Gonzalez contributed 9 and 7 points in the win. Mislina Kilic topped the Turkish scoring with 16.

 

The Dominicans outscored Turkish side 5-4 in aces and 12-4 in blocks. Natalia Martinez had four aces and Angelica Hinojosa registered four blocks.

 

In Maunabo, Bulgaria defeated Puerto Rico 3-1 (25-23, 17-25, 19-25, 21-25) in Pool A behind a 23-points performance by Gergana Dimitrova and 18 points from Miroslava Paskova. Karla Santos finished with 22 points for Puerto Rico.

 

Also in Maunabo, Russia crushed Cuba 3-0 (25-9, 25-22, 25-17) dominating 12-2 and 12-3 in the blocking and aces categories, respectively.

 

Anna Lazareva topped Russia with 19 points while Anet Alfonso finished with 10 points for Cuba.
