Dominicans win silver medal in Orlando

ORLANDO, Florida, June 20, 2015 – The Dominican Republic U20 Volleyball National Team had to settle for the silver medal for second year in a row after a successful run at the international tournament organized by the U.S. Amateur Athletic Union (AAU).

The event took place at the ESPN Wide World of Sports and Orange County Convention Center.

In the gold medal match against a powerful China team that didn’t lose a single set throughout the competition, the Dominican side coached by Cristian Cruz succumbed in a tough battle by score of 2-0 (25-22, 25-21). Last year, the Dominican team was subdued by Brazil in the match for the championship.

Following the match against China, the representatives of Dominican Republic came from behind to defeat the USA team by score of 2-1 (23-25, 25-19, 15-11).

It was the second comeback victory for the Dominicans who one day earlier also erased a one-set deficit to beat Slovenia.

Setter Yokaty Perez was the captain of the Dominican Republic and the team included also opposite player Massiel Matos with Natalia Martinez and Maria Yvett Garcia as outside hitters, Angelica Hinojosa, Lizbeth Rosario and Gabriela Hernandez as middle blockers, the libero Larysmer Martinez and the defensive specialist Carolina Carrera.

The technical staff was completed by Alexandre Ceccato as assistant coach, Edgar Arias as trainer and Agripina Martinez as team manager.
