Eastern Caribbean Olympic Committees join forces for development

 

GRENADA, July 7, 2017 - The Association of National Olympic Committees of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (ANOCES) has taken a significant step aimed at facilitating the development of sport in the sub region.

 

At its annual General Assembly held in Grenada on Saturday 1 July 2017, the membership agreed to work with the following sports in respect of their systematic development and hosting of annual sub regional Championships under its ambit for the period 2018 – 2020:

 

 

1.      Athletics

2.      Swimming

3.      Boxing

4.      Netball

5.      Cycling

6.      Beach Volleyball

7.      Table Tennis

8.      Football

9.      Basketball (3 on 3)

 

The decision in respect of the sports selected was based on the following criteria:

 

1.      Participation by all members of ANOCES

2.      Clear development pathway for the sport

3.      History of success by the countries in the sub region

4.      Universality access as it relates to the CAC, Pan Am, Commonwealth and Olympic Games

5.      Sports that are already supported by our NOCs

6.      Gender equity

7.      Performance appraisal

 

The Assembly agreed the convening of a meeting with the key stakeholders of the aforementioned sports later this year to discuss the decision and to encourage where not yet existent, the formation of appropriate sub regional structures to manage the development process regarding the initiative.

 

ANOCES also suggested that the leadership of the selected sports work together to encourage the respective international and continental federations to support their respective sub regional championships being designated qualifiers for other events.
