Former NORCECA President Lulo Mendoza passed away
SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic, January 4, 2014 – The NORCECA
Confederation regrets to inform that its past president Luis –Lulo-
Mendoza passed away in his native Puerto Rico on Saturday after
a long illness.
Mr. Mendoza, a lawyer by profession, presided over the NORCECA
Confederation from 1988-2001 and was a former member of the FIVB
Board of Administration.
He also chaired the FIVB Legal Commission and was a member of
the FIVB Rules of the Game Commission.
In his native Puerto Rico he was recognized as a sport leader
and presided the Puerto Rican Volleyball Federation from 1986-95
and coached the women’s national team in the 70’s.
“Lulo Mendoza dedicated for the most part of his life to the
sport of volleyball and led our institution during very tough
critical times,” president of NORCECA Cristobal Marte Hoffiz
said. “We are deeply saddened by the news and NORCECA always
will be in debt with Lulo for all his dedication towards our
discipline.”
“I had a close relationship with Lulo and he was always willing
to share his experiences,” Marte Hoffiz added. “He was a symbol
of volleyball in his native Puerto Rico and a beloved person in
the community. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.”
Last April, following a proposal submitted by Marte Hoffiz and
seconded by Marta Centeno and Lucille Hobson, the NORCECA
Executive Committee and Board of Administration voted
unanimously to confer Mr. Mendoza the Golden Collar Order.
A large delegation of NORCECA traveled to Puerto Rico for the
ceremony held at the Four Points Hotel in Caguas where Mendoza
lived. |
