Honduras downs El Salvador for second win

TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras, August 8, 2014.- Hosts Honduras downed El Salvador 3-0 (25-16, 25-17, 25-18) for their second win in the closing match of the second day of competitions of the II Women’s U-23 AFECAVOL Central American Championship.

Honduras prevailed over El Salvador presenting difficulties in set three as the score remained close most of the time. Honduras remains undefeated with a 2-0 win-loss record and ten points and leading the competition; El Salvador drops to 0-2.

The home team had superiority by in spikes 28-20 and in service points by 7-1. Both were equally effective in blocks with 3 points. Honduras took advantage of El Salvador’s 37 errors while committing 27 of their own.

Outside hitter Dariana Flores was Honduras’ top scorer with 10 points, middle blocker Mariajosse Diaz scored 9 points, opposite Monica Rivera and outside hitter Lesby Midence tallied 7 apiece. Outside hitter Maria Jose Galeano led El Salvador scorers with 12 points, all in kills.

Honduras’ captain Eloisa Sarmiento expressed “we settled down too much in the third set but we recovered fast to take the win. El Salvador did an excellent job changing their tactics. For tomorrow we will continue with the same energy to battle hard against Costa Rica”.

Gabriela Soriano captain of El Salvador indicated “in the third set my outside hitters defined better but not enough as Honduras’ receptors performed well. Unfortunately we couldn’t win today either. We remain in contention y hopefully we can be more consistent”.

“In practice today we studied El Salvador and gave our players all the tool necessaries to face them; sometimes things didn’t work out as our opponents worked well in their spikes obtaining important points. When our blocking worked, our game proposal was more effective and we were able to take more distance in the scores, especially with El Salvador’s numerous errors. As I said in the beginning, this category is an interesting one and the players are developing in a good way” said coach Marco Tejada.

Coach Nery Henriquez of El Salvador said “my team has players between 13-15 years old and eight are inexperienced, so this is definitely a learning experience for which I’m satisfied. We began each set with the score very close but the lack of international exposure marks a difference”.
