Hunsel powers Suriname to women bronze

 

PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad, August 10, 2014 - Sandrina Hunsel was once again a dominant force to lead Suriname to a straight sets (25-12, 25-22, 25-15) victory over Barbados in the Women’s Division of the 15th Caribbean Zonal Volleyball Association (CAZOVA) Championship at the Jean Pierre Complex, Mucurapo.

 

Hunsel, who is in the running to cop the “Best Spiker” and “Best Scorer” awards ended with a match-high 23 points, laced with 21 kills, a block and one ace while Sigourney Kame and Morena Leter added 11 and ten points, respectively, in the 80 minutes contest.

 

Shari Matthews was the lone player in double-digit scoring with 16 for the Barbadians.

 

Captain Thonya Joseph added seven for Barbados in the loss which ensured its lowest finish in the history of the competition, after their previous lowest a third place, both in 1996 and 2010.

 

Credit though, to Suriname which seemed hungrier of both teams for the top three finish as they outscored their opponents, 44-25 on spikes and 7-2 on aces, but was bettered on blocks by Barbados, 7-5.

 

Suriname was also aided by 19 errors from Barbados, while committing only 15.
