Canadians Reader and Schalk among undefeated pairs
SEVEN MILES BEACH, Grand Cayman, March 25, 2011 – Canadians
Martin Reader and Chaim Schalk were among the winners of two
matches in the men’s first day of pool-play action at the Cayman
Islands Beach Volleyball Tournament, the first stage of the 2011
NORCECA Circuit.
Playing in Pool B, Reader, who won last year’s edition with a
different partner, defeated the USA-1 team of William Strickland
and Lucas Wisniakowski (21-15, 22-20) and prevailed 21-10, 23-21
against Jeovanny Medrano and David Vargas of El Salvador.
The other winners of two contests during the opening day were
Orlando Irizarry and Amaury Velasco of Puerto Rico-1, Josh
Binstock and Richard Van Huizen of Canada-1, Yewddy Perez and
German Recio of Dominican Republic, and Roberto Rodriguez and
Christopher Underwood of Puerto Rico-2.
Irizarry/Velasco defeated Luis Baide and Wilfredo Vega of
Honduras by score of 21-16, 21-12 and crushed Curtis Gaskin and
Winston Gittens of Barbados 21-6, 21-10. Binstock/Van Huizen won
21-9, 21-14 over Duncan Hamman and Phillippe Deslandes of Cayman
Islands-2 and 21-12, 21-11 against Shawn Seabrookes and St
Claire Hodge of St. Kitts and Nevis.
Perez/Recio scored a 21-10, 21-16 win against Hamman/Deslandes
and won 21-19, 21-13 against Seabrookes/Hodge.
Rodriguez/Underwood on 21-7, 21-11 against Julio Recinos and
Erick Garrido of Guatemala and came from behind to defeat
Esteban Escobar and Alexander Villegas of Costa Rica by score of
17-21, 21-18, 15-9.
