Mexicans are favorites to win in Boqueron

BOQUERON, Puerto Rico, September 17, 2014 – The Boqueron Beach Volleyball Tournament returns to the NORCECA Circuit for second year in a row and for the third time in the history of the regional competition with sixteen teams taking part in each gender representing a total of sixteen countries.

Canada and United States will be entering two teams per gender while Mexico, Costa Rica and Honduras are each registering two women teams and Puerto Rico will be represented with two men duos.

The competition will take part in the facilities built on the occasion of the Central American and Caribbean Games of Mayaguez 2010 which comply with all the international requirements.

Mexicans Lombardo Ontiveros and Juan Virgen, who captured the men’s gold medal last year, will be out to defend the title in Boqueron, located in the western part of Puerto Rico. In fact Ontiveros will be looking for a third gold medal since he also won in 2010 partnering with his brother Ulises.

Puerto Rican Roberto Rodriguez and Erick Haddock, who claimed the gold medal this year in Manzanillo, Mexico, are among the strong contenders in the men’s division.

In the women’s field, Mexicans Martha Revuelta and Bibi Canderlas are the pre-tournament favorites to win but will face a strong competition. They won this year the stop held in Huixquilucan, Mexico.

Team will be divided into four pools of four teams to play a round-robin with the top two from each pool moving to the main draw for a single elimination event. The semifinals and finals will take place on Sunday and will be nationally televised.
