NORCECA mourns death of Bahamas sport leader

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic, December 28, 2015 – NORCECA Confederation is saddened to inform to all its members about the tragic death of Devince Smith, second vice president of Bahamas Volleyball Federation.

The 43 year-old Smith, who served also as coach of the Bahamas Junior Men’s Team for the past nine years, was murdered at his home during a robbery attempt.

Over the years, Devince represented the Bahamas Volleyball Federation at FIVB and NORCECA congresses and most recently in March 2015, he was the Bahamas delegate at the CAZOVA Congress in Trinidad and Tobago.

He started his volleyball career at the tender age of 14 and played for several clubs in the local league. When his playing days were over, Smith moved to the coaching ranks and he was a certified FIVB Coach Level III.

“As coach of the junior men national team, he paid special attention to young players and worked hard to develop the sport while sharing his knowledge and enthusiasm”, said NORCECA President, Cristobal Marte Hoffiz

“No doubt this tragic event has been very disturbing for the volleyball community in the Bahamas and for the many other people who knew and cared for him,” he added.

On behalf of NORCECA Confederation we extend our sincere condolences to Devince’s family and the volleyball fraternity of Bahamas.

He will be sadly missed by all of us! May his soul rest in peace!
