Nicaragua prevailed over El Salvador in opening day

 

   

GUATEMALA CITY, Guatemala, October 16, 2015.- Nicaragua prevailed over El Salvador 3-0 (25-14, 25-19, 25-21) to earn their first victory on day one of competition at the AFECAVOL Men’s U-19 Central American Championship at Teodoro Palacios Flores.

Nicaragua dominated set one with little resistance from El Salvador.  In set two, El Salvador forced longer rallies to keep the score closer. El Salvador held a five point advantage in set three that Nicaragua reduced with a lot of effort.

Nicaragua produced more opportunities to overcome El Salvador with huge advantage in spikes (35-17) and a 4-1 margin in aces. In the blocking category, both registered 4 points and in errors both committed 32.

Outside hitter Bayron Hernandez of Nicaragua led all scorers with 19 points, the only player with double digits.

On day two of competition, Nicaragua (1-0) meets Belize (0-1) and El Salvador (0-1) faces Honduras (1-0).

Jonny Zeledon captain de Nicaragua said “we started well, but later on we were overconfident; in the end our result was positive. I congratulate my team because they didn’t lose control and for a job well done. I want to congratulate El Salvador for they strong fight”.

Diego Ascencio captain of El Salvador said “we had difficulties in concentrating, as the match went further we improved in this matter; the errors in blocking and in defense were less at the end. This match has to open our eyes that we must start every match like we finished today”.

Head coach Osman Hernandez of Nicaragua said “I believe El Salvador had a better strategy after the second set and they disregarded our captain better. My boys felt scared as El Salvador got closer and we were winning”.

Head coach Gerson Ceron of El Salvador indicated “I don’t want to dismiss Nicaragua’s good performance, but my team is young, they were nervous and they are inexperienced. At the end our blocking had better orientation and I consider that as the tournament moves forward we will improve. I believe the referee had a strong influence in key points”.
