USA and Canada win, Cuba downed at home

 

   

LONG BEACH, USA, June 5, 2015 – USA prevailed 3-1 (25-18, 24-26, 25-15, 28-26) in their match against Russia to claim leadership in Pool B of the FIVB Volleyball World League at the Walter Pyramid on Friday. 

 

Murphy Troy was the top scorer for USA with 16 points while teammates Matthew Anderson and Maxwell Holt scored 15 points apiece. Pavel Moroz led the Russian scorers with 14 points.

 

In Halifax, Canada, hosts Canada beat Argentina 3-0 (25-21, 27-25, 25-19) in the teams’ showdown at the Scotiabank Place in Halifax, Nova Scotia, in front of 2,100 enthusiastic east-coast fans.


Gavin Schmitt led Canada in scoring with 22 points, including an ace to finish the game. Rudy Verhoeff, Gord Perrin and Steve Marshall each contributed seven points to the Canadian team’s victory. The top scorer for Argentina was Nicolas Bruno with 12.

 

In Havana, Cuba, The visiting Bulgarian side defeated hosts Cuba 3-1 (25-19, 25-21, 24-26, 25-23) in Pool C at the Ciudad Deportiva Coliseum.

 

Nikolay Penchev and Todor Skrimov led Bulgaria to victory with 12 and 10 points, respectively. Cuban captain Rolando Abreu Cepeda topped all scorers with 26 points on the losing effort.
