USA Olympics-Bound to Defend 2008 Title

Long Beach, California, May 12, 2012 – The United States, the defending Olympic Games champion, earned the right to return to defend its men’s volleyball title with a 28-26, 25-18, 25-20 gold-medal victory over Canada on Saturday evening during the NORCECA Men’s Continental Olympic Qualification Tournament that started on May 7 in Long Beach. Cuba Picks Up Bronze Over Puerto Rico

Long Beach, California, May 12, 2012 – Cuba captured the bronze medal of the NORCECA Men’s Continental Olympic Qualification Tournament by defeating Puerto Rico 25-20, 25-21, 25-15 on Saturday evening at Long Beach, Calif. Leon Wilfredo led Cuba with 13 points and Yenry Bell chipped in 11 points in the victory. Puerto Rico’s Juan Figueroa notched a match-high 18 points and Ezequiel Cruz contributed 11 points. While Puerto Rico held a 42-41 advantage in attack points, Cuba made up the difference with a 11-2 block advantage and 4-0 margin in aces. Cuba also took advantage of 19 Puerto Rico errors to its own 12 errors. More  Español

Mexico Breaks Down Dominican Republic for Fifth Place
Long Beach, California, May 12, 2012 – Mexico collected a 25-21, 25-16, 25-21 victory Saturday over Dominican Republic during the fifth-place match of the NORCECA Men’s Continental Olympic Qualification Tournament that started six days earlier in Long Beach, Calif. Carlos Guerra sparked Mexico with 23 points, while Ismael Guerrero contributed eight points in the victory. Dominican Republic was led by Eduardo Concepcion’s 11 points, which was matched by Elnis Palomino’s 11 points. Mexico’s offense kept Dominican Republic off guard with a 43-25 advantage. More  Español

Trinidad & Tobago Claims 7th. with Win Over Costa Rica

Long Beach, California, May 12, 2012 – Trinidad & Tobago claimed seventh place in the final NORCECA Men’s Continental Olympic Qualification Tournament following its 25-18, 25-23, 15-25, 25-22 victory over Costa Rica Saturday afternoon at the Walter Pyramid in Long Beach, Calif. USA Moves into Gold Medal Match against Canada

Long Beach, California, May 11, 2012 – USA remains in the hunt for an Olympic Games berth through the NORCECA Men’s Continental Olympic Qualification Tournament after coming back from a slow start to defeat Cuba 21-25, 25-18, 25-17, 25-16 in the semifinal round on Friday night at the Walter Pyramid in Long Beach, Calif. Dominican Republic Digs Past Trinidad & Tobago

Long Beach, California, May 11, 2012 – Dominican Republic scored a 25-21, 22-25, 27-25, 25-19 victory over Trinidad & Tobago Friday afternoon in the 5-8 Classification Round of the NORCECA Men’s Continental Olympic Qualification Tournament being held May 7-12 at Long Beach, Calif. Jose Miguel Caceres paced Dominican Republic with 18 points, while Elnis Palomino contributed 17 points and Wilfrido Hernandez 16 points.  More  Español

Mexico Tops Costa Rica

Long Beach, California, May 11, 2012 – Mexico secured a 25-19, 25-19, 25-16 victory over Costa Rica Friday afternoon in the 5-8 Classification Round of the NORCECA Men’s Continental Olympic Qualification Tournament being held May 7-12 at Long Beach, Calif. Mexico was led by Carlos Guerra’s 15 points, followed by Daniel Vargas’ 11 points. Richard Smith Hall contributed 11 points for Costa Rica and Esteban Escobar added nine points. Puerto Rico Stops Mexico in Quarterfinals

Long Beach, California, May 10, 2012 – Puerto Rico collected a 25-21, 25-23, 20-25, 25-19 quarterfinal round victory over Mexico in the NORCECA Men’s Continental Olympic Qualification Tournament being held May 7-12 in Long Beach, Calif. Puerto Rico moves into a semifinal showdown with Pool B winner Canada on Friday at 18:00. Puerto Rico was led by Ezequiel Cruz and Juan Figueroa who both had 20 points. Mexico was paced by Carlos Guerra’s 18 points, followed by Gerardo Contreras’ 15 points. Gregory Berrios provided Puerto Rico with 18 of his team’s 40 digs in the match. More  Español

Long Beach, California, May 9, 2012 – Canada, ranked No. 18 in the world and No. 4 in NORCECA, came out fired up and upset Cuba 25-21, 25-17, 25-21 on Wednesday to finish 3-0 and first in Pool B of the NORCECA Men’s Continental Olympic Qualification Tournament being held May 7-12 in Long Beach, Calif. Cuba entered the tournament ranked No. 5 in the world and No. 1 in NORCECA. Gavin Schmitt collected 21 points for Canada and Frederic Winters added 16 points in the victory. More Español

Long Beach, California, May 9, 2012 – Puerto Rico captured its first victory of the 2012 NORCECA Men’s Continental Olympic Qualification Tournament Wednesday with a 25-15, 25-18, 25-16 victory over Dominican Republic at the Walter Pyramid in Long Beach, Calif. Puerto Rico had four players reach double-figure scoring topped by Ezequiel Cruz Lozada’s 13 points, while Juan Figueroa tallied 12 points in the victory. More  Español

United States Cruises by Costa Rica  

Long Beach, California, May 8, 2012 – The United States overwhelmed Costa Rica 25-14, 25-9, 25-9 to improve to 2-0 in Pool A of the NORCECA Men’s Continental Olympic Qualification Tournament being held through May 12 at the Walter Pyramid in Long Beach, Calif. Costa Rica falls to 0-2 in the tournament.   David McKienzie scored a match-high 10 points in starting just the third set for USA. Clay Stanley scored eight points in two sets, while Ryan Millar and Russell Holmes tallied seven points each out of the middle blocker position. More  Español

Long Beach, California, May 8, 2012 – Canada used a 15-3 block advantage to sweep Puerto Rico 25-19, 25-20, 25-13 on Tuesday during the second day of the NORCECA Men’s Continental Olympic Qualification Tournament at the Walter Pyramid in Long Beach, Calif. Long Beach, California, May 8, 2012 – Cuba improved to 2-0 in Pool B in the NORCECA Men’s Continental Olympic Qualification Tournament by defeating Dominican Republic 25-15. 25-21, 25-15 on Tuesday at the Walter Pyramid in Long Beach, Calif. Dominican Republic falls to 0-2 in the tournament. Cuba was led by Fernando Hernandez’s 15 points, while Rolando Cepeda added eight points. Dominican Republic was paced by Jose Miguel Caceres’ 11 points, including four aces. Cuba limited its errors to 11 in the match while taking advantage of 30 Dominican Republic errors.  More  Español
