Dominican Yonkaira Peña elected MVP

Lima, Peru, September 8, 2012 – Yonkaira Peña, one of the major contributors to the success of Dominican Republic in the U-23 Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup, was named the Most Valuable Player of the competition that concluded at Miguel Grau Coliseum of Lima on Saturday. She was one three Dominican players who received individual awards during the closing ceremony of the event chaired over by Cristobal Marte Hoffiz,  president of the Volleyball Pan American Union and First Executive Vice President of FIVB. Candida Arias was selected as the best blocker and Brenda Castillo was awarded as best digger. Canada’s Kelci French was the best server.    More  Español

Dominican Republic claim gold at U-23

Lima, Peru, September 8, 2012 – Dominican Republic was crowned as champions of the first edition of the U-23 Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup after outclassing Brazil in straight sets (25-18, 25-16 25-19) showing evident superiority over their South American opponent in the match at Miguel Grau Coliseum of El Callao on Saturday. Lisvel Eve led the outstanding performance of the Dominican side with 17 points, including 5 blocks and 2 service winners. Argentina win bronze medal

Lima, Peru, September 8, 2012 – Argentina won the bronze medal of the U-23 Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup following their four-set win (20-25, 25-14, 25-16, 25-20) over hosts Peru in the last match of Saturday at Miguel Grau Coliseum of Lima. Lucia Fresco and Maria Calvete topped Argentina with 18 and 16 points while Tanya Acosta and Antonela Curatola added 8 and 7 tallies in the victory. Peru’s Raffaella Camet and Angela Leyva finished with 13 and 11 points respectively. It was a match plagued by errors from both sides as the winners committed 27 mistakes to 35 by the defeated team.   More  Español

Palacio leads Cuba to fifth place

Lima, Peru, September 8, 2012 – Yoana Palacio recorded a match-high 24 in leading Cuba to a five-set victory (16-25, 26-24, 25-18, 22-25, 15-7) over Canada in the match for fifth place of the U-23 Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup on Saturday. Four other Cubans had double digits in the scores as Regla Gracia charted 16, Daymara Lescay and Alena Rojas each compiled 12 while Sulian Matienzo collected 10. Royale Richardson led Canada with 17 tallies followed by Casie Gano, Amy Leschied and Kelci French with 12, 11 and 10 respectively.  More  Español

Colombia take seventh place

Lima, Peru, September 8, 2012 – Colombia blanked Costa Rica 25-17, 25-16, 25-9 in the match for seventh place of the U-23 Women’s Pan American Volleyball Cup on Saturday’s afternoon at Miguel Grau Coliseum of El Callao in Lima. Diana Arrechea (14), Silvia Galeano (12) and Melissa Rangel (10) were the top offensive weapons for Colombia in the victory. Captain Maria Marin had a match high 5 aces while Galeano added four of her own in the win. Evelyn Sibaja finished with eight points for the defeated side. Brazil reach final title match

Lima, Peru, September 7, 2012 – Brazil will play against Dominican Republic for the gold medal of the U-23 Women’s Pan American Volleyball Cup following their straight-set (26-24, 25-20, 25-18) win over hosts Peru in the last match of Friday at Miguel Grau Coliseum of Lima. The Brazilian side held a huge 12-5 margin in the blocking department and also led in service winners 7-5. Rosamaría Montibeller led Brazil with 17 points, including three blocks while Sara Silva and Gabriela Braga each contributed 9 points. More  Español

Cuba dominate Costa Rica

Lima, Peru, September 7, 2012 – Cuba outclassed Costa Rica 25-14, 25-8, 25-7 in a consolation round match for the 5-8 positions of the U-23 Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup on Friday. The winners overwhelmed the defeated side 13-0 from the service line with Alena Rojas and Daymara Lescay each recording 5 aces and also held a wide margin of 10-2 in blocks. Dominican Republic to play for the gold medal

Lima, Peru, September 7, 2012 – Dominican Republic advanced to the gold medal match of the U-23 Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup by defeating Argentina in four sets (25-17, 25-17, 26-28, 25-20) in the first semifinal match at Miguel Grau Coliseum of Lima on Friday. Jeoselyna Rodriguez led four Dominican players with double figures in the scoring sheets with 20 points, followed by Yonkaira Peña with 19. Lisvel Eve and Candida Arias added 15 and 10 with four and five blocks respectively. Lucia Fresco was the best scorer of Argentina.  More  Español

Canada breeze past Colombia in straight sets

Lima, Peru, September 7, 2012 – Canada scored a 3-0 (25-23, 25-23, 25-20) victory over Colombia in the consolation round for the 5-8 positions of the U-23 Women’s Pan American Cup at Miguel Grau Coliseum on Friday. The North Americans held advantage of 11-4 in the blocking category and trailed 6-5 in the serving aces department. Amy Leschied led Canada with 12 points, including four blocks, followed by Nicole Bazin with 8 tallies and Amber Brown and Kelci French with six apiece. Peru score come-from-behind victory

Lima, Peru, September 6, 2012 – Hosts Peru overcame Cuba in four sets (15-25, 25-18, 25-20, 25-22) and will play Brazil in the semifinals of the U-23 Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup at Miguel Grau Coliseum of El Callao in Lima. Angela Leyva was the leading scorer in the victory with 16 points, followed by Karla Ortiz and Raffaella Camet with 12 and 10 points respectively. Clarivet Yllescas and Ginna Lopez each added 9 tallies. Yoana Palacio led Cuba with 16 points while Alena Rojas and Yaremi Mendaro each registered 15. Argentina climb the semifinals of U-23 Cup

 Lima, Peru, September 5, 2012 – Argentina scored a 3-0 (25-19, 25-19, 25-16) over Canada in just 67 minutes in the first quarterfinal match of the U-23 Women’s Pan American Cup at Miguel Grau Coliseum of Lima on Thursday. Once again Lucia Fresco, the top scorer of the competition, led the offense of Argentina with 23 points, including three aces and two blocks while Tanya Acosta added 12, including four aces in the victory. Lima, Peru, September 5, 2012 – Dominican Republic recorded a 3-0 (25-23, 25-19, 18-25, 25-20) victory over Peru to conclude the preliminary round of the U-23 Women’s Pan American Cup with a 3-0 mark and the top position in Pool B. Jeoselyna Rodriguez was the best scorer of the winning side with 20 points followed by Yonkaira Peña with 13. Lisvel Eve and Candida Arias added 12 and 8 respectively with 4 blocks apiece. Canada sneak into the quarterfinals

Lima, Peru, September 5, 2012 – Canada recorded a 3-0 (25-16, 25-15, 25-18) victory over Costa Rica to advance to the quarterfinals of the U-23 Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup on Wednesday. The Canadians finished Pool B with a 1-2 mark while Costa Rica remained winless and will play for the 5-8 positions. The North Americans held advantages of 10-2 and 9-2 in serves and blocks respectively in addition to a margin of 32-19 in attacks. Brazil beat Cuba to win Pool A

Lima, Peru, September 5, 2012 – Brazil finished atop of Pool A of the U-23 Women’s Pan American Volleyball Cup following their 3-1 (23-25, 25-15, 25-8, 25-17) victory over Cuba at Miguel Grau Coliseum of Lima on Wednesday. The South Americans had a 3-0 win-loss record while the Cubans advanced to the quarterfinals round as the third placed team behind Argentina with 1-2 mark. Brazil’s block provided a 12-4 difference over Cuba to go along with a 55-34 advantage in attacks. The winners held a huge 8-1 margin in service aces. Argentina edge Colombia in five-set thriller

Lima, Peru, September 5, 2012 – Argentina came from behind to edge Colombia (23-25, 25-21, 22-25, 25-18, 19-17) in the first five-setter of the U-23 Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup on Wednesday at Miguel Grau Coliseum of Lima. Argentina improved to a 2-1 win-loss record and Colombia remained winless in three outings. Trailing 11-6 in the tie-breaker, the Argentineans came back on the shoulders of Lucia Fresco to tie the score at 12-all before claiming the eventual victory with an ace of Natalia Aispirua followed by the block of Maria Calvete. Peru stay unbeaten at 2-0

Lima, Peru, September 4, 2012 – Peru defeated Canada in four sets (25-15, 21-25, 26-24, 25-22) for their second triumph in two outings in the U-23 Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup on Tuesday. Canada dropped to a 0-2 record in Pool B. The home side took advantage of 40 unforced errors made by the Canadians while making 26. The winners were better from the service line 10-6 but the defeated side held a 17-7 margin in the blocking category. Lima, Peru, September 4, 2012 – Dominican Republic hammered Costa Rica 3-0 (25-6, 25-8, 25-17) to claim their second victory in as many outings in Pool B of the U-23 Women’s Pan American Cup. The defeated side fell to a 0-2 record. The winners’ defense at the net produced an 8-1 advantage in blocks and they also had the same margin of 8-1 in serving aces. The Dominicans held an overwhelming gap of 36-10 in attacks. Lima, Peru, September 4, 2012 – Brazil subdued Argentina 3-0 (25-18, 25-16, 26-24) in a classic South American duel that took place in the U-23 Women’s Pan American Cup at Miguel Grau Coliseum of Lima on Tuesday. Brazil improved their win-loss record to 2-0 and Argentina fell to 1-1 as both teams were coming off victories in the opening day in Pool A. The winners held a commanding offensive margin with a 42-30 advantage in kills and produced an 8-3 difference in blocks. Both teams scored six service winners. Lima, Peru, September 3, 2012 – Dominican Republic brushed aside Canada in consecutive frames (25-14, 25-13, 25-20) in their first match of Pool B in the U-23 Women’s Pan American Cup at Miguel Grau Coliseum on Monday. The Dominicans held an overwhelming advantage of 40-18 in attacks and committed 18 errors to 25 by the Canadians. The winners outblocked their rivals 8-6 while the defeated side was better in service aces 5-2. Yonkaira Peña and Lisvel Eve registered 17 and 14 points respectively as the top scorers of the winning side. Jeoselyna Rodriguez contributed 8 points and Candida Arias added six. Sara Silva topped Brazil with 25 points, including five blocks and two aces, followed by captain Rosamaria Montibeller who finished with 20. Paula Camila Mohr chipped in with 10 tallies. Eight teams to compete at U-23 Pan American Cup

Lima, Peru, September 2, 2012 –The inaugural U-23 Women’s Pan American Cup serves off at Miguel Grau Coliseum of El Callao in Lima on Monday with the participation of eight teams. Argentina, Brazil, Colombia and Cuba will play in Pool A while Canada, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic and Peru will compete in Pool B. Teams will play a preliminary pool round-robin with the top teams of each group getting a bye to the semifinals. Teams of second and third place will play in crossover quarterfinals with the finals scheduled on Saturday 8. The event is organized by the Pan American Volleyball Union in conjunction with the Peruvian Volleyball Federation.  More  Español

First U-23 Women’s Pan Am Cup in Peru 

Lima, Peru, August 28, 2012 - The Peruvian Volleyball Federation, announced the inaugural U-23 Pan American Cup to be played at Coliseo Miguel Grau del Callao from September 3 to 8. Juan Castro Romero, president of the Peruvian Volleyball Federation, made the announcement during a press conference in Lima on Monday. Most of the best he eight teams in the continent will be taking part in the competition to be telecasted by Frecuencia Latina national station.
