United States win fifth crown in Pan Am Cup

CAÑETE, Lima, June 25, 2017 – The United States became the winningest country in the history of the Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup earning their fifth crown after defeating Dominican Republic for the gold medal of the sixteenth edition of the event on Sunday. The USA won 3-1 (25-19, 19-25, 25-20, 25-23) in front of a capacity crowd at Lolo Fernandez Coliseum in Cañete. The winners scored 16 blocks –four apiece by Paige Tapp and Rhamat Al Hassan- against 8 of the defeated side. Puerto Rico downs Peru to claim bronze medal

CAÑETE, Peru, June 25. 2017 – Puerto Rico claimed the bronze medal of the XVI Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup with a 3-1 (25-22, 13-25, 27-25, 25-15) victory over hosts Peru at Lolo Fernández Coliseum in Cañete on Sunday. Daly Santana once again led Puerto Rico with 23 points but she received assistance from three other players who also scored in double digits. Shirley Ferrer and Ana Jusino each registered 14 points and Pilar Marie Victoria chipped in with 10 points in the victory. Casanova set new record with 41 points for Cuba

LIMA, Peru, June 25, 2017 – Heidy Casanova scored a cup-record 41 points in leading Cuba to a 3-1 (25-19, 23-25, 25-17, 25-22) victory over Canada in the match for fifth place of the XVI Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup by Movistar at Manuel Bonilla Coliseum of Lima on Sunday. Casanova broke the previous record of 37 points established by Dominican Sidarka Nuñez against United States on May 5, 2008 in Baja California, Mexico. She scored 38 attacks and added three blocks. LIMA, Peru, June 24, 2017 – Canada relied on a terrific defense at the net to defeat Argentina 3-1 (28-26, 22-25, 25-21, 25-19) in a qualification match of the XVI Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup by Movistar at Manuel Bonilla Coliseum of Miraflores on Saturday. The Canadian side registered 13 blocks, including seven by Jennifer Cross, to earn a shot at fifth place of the tournament on Sunday against Cuba. LIMA, Peru, June 24, 2017 – Cuba advanced to the match for fifth place of the XVI Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup by Movistar following a 3-1 (25-15, 25-22, 18-25, 25-21) victory over Colombia at Manuel Bonilla Coliseum of Miraflores on Saturday. CAÑETE, Peru, June 23, 2017 – Angela Leyva amassed 26 points carrying Peru to a 3-2 (20-25, 25-21, 20-25, 25-19, 15-9) victory over Argentina in the quarterfinals of the XVI Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup by Movistar in front of a full house at Lolo Fernandez Coliseum on Friday night. The victory earned Peru a semifinal spot against United States, the undefeated winners of Pool A. LIMA, Peru, June 23, 2017 – Canada climbed back from  0-2 deficit to overcome Venezuela 3-2 (21-25, 22-25, 25-17, 25-22, 15-10) in a qualification match for the 7th to 10th positions of the XVI Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup at Manuel Bonilla Coliseum of Lima on Friday. CAÑETE, Peru, June 23, 2017 – Puerto Rico advanced to a semifinal match against defending champions Dominican Republic after defeating Cuba in straight sets 3-0 (25-23, 25-22, 25-17) in a quarterfinal contest of the XVI Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup at Lolo Fernández Coliseum of Cañete on Friday. Daly Santana finished with 20 points as the leader in the balanced offense of Puerto Rico spread out by the dynamic setter Natalia Valentin, the captain of the team. LIMA, Peru, June 23, 2017 – Colombia defeated Trinidad & Tobago in straight sets 3-0 (25-19, 25-22, 25-17) in an elimination match for the positions 7 to 10 of the XVI Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup by Movistar at Manuel Bonilla Coliseum in Lima on Friday. Dayana Segovia registered 18 points, all but one via spikes, as the offensive leader for the Colombian side. Valerin Carabali and Maria Martinez were next with 9 and 8 points, respectively, while Yeisy Soto and Giselle Perez each had 7 in the victory. LIMA, Peru, June 21, 2017 – Canada overpowered Chile 3-0 (25-16, 25-12, 25-9) to finish with a 3-2 record and 14 points in Pool B of the XVI Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup by Movistar at Eduardo Dibos Coliseum on Wednesday. The big difference in the score card was not enough to grant Canada the final spot in the quarterfinals, one that went to Cuba based on the point-ratio difference. It was the first win for Trinidad & Tobago while Chile remained winless in four outings. Channon Thompson was the big weapon for the Trinidadian side with 25 points, including three aces. Sinead Jack and Darlene Ramdin charted 12 and 10 points, respectively. Chile’s Beatriz Novoa had 13 points in the loss. LIMA, Peru, June 19, 2017 – Peru overcame a high-spirited Trinidad & Tobago 3-1 (25-19, 24-26, 25-21, 25-17) to stay undefeated in Pool B of the XVI Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup by Movistar at Eduardo Dibos Coliseum on Monday night. Peru improved to 3-0 (14 points) while Trinidad & Tobago remained winless at 0-3 (1 point) in the preliminary phase. Carla Rueda and Angela Leyva carried most of the offensive load of the home team with 18 points apiece. CAÑETE, Peru, June 19, 2017- Argentina got their third victory in Pool A of the XVI Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup by Movistar by defeating Colombia in a close match 3-0 (25-22, 26-24, 26-24) at Lolo Fernandez Coliseum of Cañete. Dayana Segovia, the Colombian wing-spiker was the top scorer of the match just ahead of Argentineans Lucia Fresco with 16, Yamila Nizetich with 14 and Emilce Sosa with 11. Argentina committed 22 unforced errors while Colombia reduced theirs to 15. However, the team coached by Guillermo Orduna marked the difference with superiority in all fundaments: Attacks (44-36), blocking (8-6) and service winners (10-6). More  Español

CAÑETE, Peru, June 19, 2017 – An intense volleyball battle took place at Lolo Fernandez Coliseum when the United States claimed a 3-2 (25-23, 25-23, 23-25, 21-25, 15-12) victory over Puerto Rico carried by opposite Elizabeth McMahon who finished with 27 points. LIMA, Peru, June 18, 2017 – Hosts Peru swept Cuba 3-0 (25-19, 25-17, 25-21) to register their second victory in Pool B of the XVI Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup by Movistar at Eduardo Dibos Coliseum of Lima on Sunday. Carla Rueda led three Peruvian players with double figures in the scores with 18 points, followed by Angela Leyva and Clarivett Yllescas with 14 and 11 points, respectively. Paula Nizetich was the main offensive contributor in the victory with 19 points followed by Emilce Sosa with 14. Leyva leads Peruvian win over Chile

LIMA, Peru, June 17, 2017 – Angela Leyva led three players with double digits in the scores as hosts Peru defeated Chile 3-0 (25-13, 25-13, 25-12) in the third and last match of day one in Pool B of the XVI Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup by Movistar at Eduardo Dibos Coliseum on Saturday. Leyva had 15 points in the one-sided contest while Maguilaura Frias and Clarivett Yllescas each contributed 11 tallies in the win. Karla Rueda added 8 points in the winning effort. United States dominated Venezuela with the serves

CAÑETE, Peru, June 17, 2017 – United States displayed a lot of serving power to beat Venezuela 3-0 (25-9, 25-16, 25-11) in the second match of Pool A of the XVI Pan American Cup by Movistar at Lolo Fernandez Coliseum in Cañete on Saturday. USA secured the dominating victory carried by their best offensive weapon the captain and setter Micha Hancock who had 13 points. The team of Karch Kiraly had a wide margin in all facets of the game leading in attacks (32-17), blocking (13-5) and aces (15-2). They only made 12 unforced errors to 15 by the losing side. Puerto Rico gets good start at Pan Am Cup

CAÑETE, Peru, June 17, 2017 – Puerto Rico started off on the right foot in Pool A of the XVI Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup by scoring a straight-set win 3-0 (25-20, 25-16, 28-26) over Colombia at Lolo Fernandez Coliseum in Cañete. Olympians Daly Santana in the attack and setter Natalia Valentin in the distribution of the offense played key roles in the victory. Casanova and Gracia lead Cuba’s win over Canada

LIMA, Peru, June 17, 2017 – Heidy Casanova and Regla Gracia combined attack carried Cuba to a 3-1 (21-25, 25-20, 25-10, 25-22) victory over Canada in the second match of Pool B at the XVI Women’s Pan American Cup on Saturday at Eduardo Dibos Coliseum. Casanova had a match-high 23 points while Gracia added 22 as Cuba recovered from a slow start against the North Americans. Cuba’s captain Sulien Matienzo contributed 14 points in the victory. Dominicans debut with close victory over Trinidad & Tobago

LIMA, Peru, June 17, 2017 – Defending champions Dominican Republic defeated Trinidad & Tobago in straight sets 3-0 (25-22, 25-21, 25-20) in the first match of Pool B  of the XVI Women’s Pan American Cup at Eduardo Dibós Coliseum on Saturday. In a match that was much closer than expected, the Trinidadians committed 30 unforced errors to 18 by the winners. Brayelin Martinez led the Dominican squad with a match-high 12 points, followed by her sister Jineiry Martinez and Yonkaira Peña with 8 and 7 points, respectively. Brayelin Martinez named MVP of Pan Am Cup

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic, July 10, 2016 – Brayelin Martinez, who amassed 30 points in the victory of the Dominican Republic over Puerto Rico at the gold medal match of the XV Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup, was named the Most Valuable Player of the annual intercontinental competition.
